Bert Bruyneel is the founder of Asta Morris, an independent bottler in Belgium. Although Bert is a passionate whisky lover for over 20 years, he started his career as the fifth generation in his family business in the meat processing industry.
After his very first drink, which was a Jack Daniels single barrel back in 1994, lightning struck. Bert’s interest in whisky grew day by day and, alongside his family business, he founded the Wee Dram Whisky Society in Belgium in 1999. His dedication to whisky was widely recognised and becoming a Malt Maniac was a natural fit.
In 2009, with encouragement from friends, Bert founded Asta Morris. Bert’s initial contribution was in the form of articles for various whisky magazines and hosting tastings and masterclasses. During the second year, Asta Morris presented its first bottling, a Glenlivet 1977/2010, followed by an official bottling of Benriach 1978 and 1975 ‘for Asta Morris’. In this series a 1977, 1979 and 1983 would follow, thanks to an old personal friendship with Billy Walker.
On this path to becoming an independent bottler Bert had to say goodbye to the Malt Maniacs. Nevertheless, he keeps challenging himself by taking on new projects.

Scotch Whisky is known the world-over by the Brand names of large blending companies. These blends are the mixture of the products of various distilleries which were originally independent family owned units. Until the middle of the 20th century there were many small firms that bottled and sold the pure product of the local distilleries. Since Victorian times the firm of William Cadenhead has provided this service. However a diminution of public interest caused the small bottling companies to close down. Only a small handful of distilleries still remain in the ownership of their founding families and even fewer of the bottling companies remain active, William Cadenhead is one of the notable survivors. Recent revival of interest in the whisky from different single distilleries has caused a surge of new firms to emerge. Many do not actually control their bottling operations and unfortunately feel it necessary to invest fictitious ancestries. However William Cadenhead has a well established pedigree and the experience of over one and a half centuries ensures that our customers can truly rely on what we put in a bottle. We guarantee that we never chill-filter or chemically alter the products that we bottle nor do we add colouring agents. Each of our bottlings of whisky, and indeed of our rums and cognacs, comes from an individually selected cask. -

In late 2004 a (very) young man by the name of David Stirk was deciding where his future lay. He loved Scotch whisky, and the love was reciprocal, so a formal arrangement was made and The Creative Whisky Co Ltd was forged in January 2005. David had already spent time swimming in the big boy’s whisky pool and decided that since the job he really wanted (Highland Park Brand Ambassador) wasn’t going to come to him, he would forge his own career. So with every dime, nickel and more importantly, pound, that he had, he bought his first cask. Which sold like reasonably priced bottles of supreme, lip-smacking, old & ex-Sherry matured whisky [I was going to say ‘hot cakes’ but nobody seems to buy these any more]. And the rest is history - although no-one has deemed it good enough for a movie, documentary, book or even a Wikipedia page. Prior to starting his own business David began his professional career with Whisky Magazine who were at the time based in Alan Partridge’s county of Norfolk [please do look up Alan Partridge if you’ve never heard of him - but make sure you start at the beginning of his story, don’t just watch the movie]. This was an interesting time but also a frustrating time so pastures new were found (not in farming though) and after a brief time spent writing the hugely popular but commercially-unpopular "The Malt Whisky Guide", David landed (and it really was landed) a job with Cadenhead's in Campbeltown; Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, and quite frankly one of the best. Many years were spent simply drinking whisky - a task that is much easier than it sounds. No, really. But again new pastures were sought, this time for geographical reasons (look up Campbeltown on a map). And not long after The Creative Whisky Co Ltd was born. -

"Mackillop's Choice" is a range of specially selected Single Malt Scotch Whiskies drawn from individual casks. Founded in 1996 by Angus Dundee Distillers (owner of the Glencadam and Tomintoul distilleries). It is named after Lorne Mackillop. Lorne Mackillop is the heir to the chief of the Mackillop Clan, which was all but wiped out by the English in the aftermath of the battle of Culloden in 1745 during the Jabobite Rebellion. Lorne selects the casks that are bottled in the Mackillop's Choice range. It is a range of specially selected single malt Scotch whiskies drawn from individual casks, and are bottled at either 43% or 46% alcohol, but more predominantly at their natural cask strength, without chill-filtering or the addition of any caramel colouring, which helps preserve the malts natural characteristics of aroma and taste. -

Not content with establishing one of the World’s leading whisky bars in Dornoch, brothers Phil and Simon Thompson have upped their ambitions and started making their own whisky and gin on-site at Dornoch Castle Hotel, forming Dornoch’s first whisky distillery. Thompson Bros at Dornoch Distillery was founded following a successful initial crowdfunding round in 2016 which saw 250 whisky lovers from all over the world eagerly put their hands in their pockets to secure hotly anticipated casks of new make spirit from Dornoch Distillery. A remarkably successful 2017 saw the team lay down casks of future single malt whisky and launch Thompson Brother’s Organic Highland Gin, available in 11 international markets. The success of Thompson Bros Organic Highland Gin and the need for more production, storage and distilling space led to the brothers launching the second round of crowdfunding in summer 2018 with the aim of expanding into a larger more versatile site. -
