The Whisky
Step away from the sherry and into the sunshine with the Aberlour 2012 White Oak Cask Maturation. While Aberlour is world renowned for its heavy Oloroso influence, the “White Oak” series is a rare and dedicated exploration of the distillery’s spirit matured exclusively in American White Oak (Quercus Alba) ex-bourbon casks. Distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2022, this 700ml single malt has spent a decade absorbing the creamy, vanillic charm of first-fill bourbon wood.
Presented at 40% ABV, the White Oak 2012 is a “deconstructed” look at Aberlour. By removing the dark fruit of the sherry cask, the spotlight falls entirely on the distillery’s bright, honeyed distillate. It is a lighter, more ethereal expression of Speyside that trades Christmas cake for orchard fruits and caramel, making it an ideal choice for those who want to see the “naked” elegance of Aberlour’s high quality spirit.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Bright, crisp, and remarkably inviting. You are greeted by a “summer morning” bouquet of zesty citrus and green apples, followed by a soft, indulgent layer of liquid caramel and vanilla fudge. As it opens, subtle notes of freshly cut hay and honeysuckle emerge, creating a fresh and vibrant aroma that feels uplifted and airy.
Palate: The mouthfeel is silky and wonderfully “velvety.” It delivers a primary burst of creamy toffee and heather honey, which quickly evolves into a mid-palate of poached pears and soft tropical fruits—think pineapple and a hint of coconut. The white oak provides a delicate structure of sweet oak spice and vanilla pod, ensuring the profile remains balanced and smooth from start to finish.
Finish: Medium to long and exceptionally clean. The finish lingers with a final, generous flourish of malted barley and fine spices (cinnamon and nutmeg), finally tapering off with a refreshing trail of lemon zest and creamy oak.
The Distillery
Aberlour, situated at the junction of the rivers Lour and Spey, was founded in 1879 by the local benefactor James Fleming. A unique factual detail: The distillery is named after the “St. Drostan’s Well,” an ancient spring located on-site that provides the exceptionally soft water used in production. While Aberlour is the top selling single malt in France (a country known for its discerning palate), most of their core range focuses on “Double Cask” maturation. The White Oak 2012 is a deliberate pivot toward the “Bourbon side” of their heritage, proving that their spirit is robust enough to carry a dram on its own without the aid of heavy sherry seasoning.
Overall Review
The Aberlour White Oak 2012 is globally reviewed as a “beautifully poised Speysider,” praised for its clarity and creamy texture. Critics have lauded its “bright, honeyed profile,” marking it as a mandatory purchase for those who enjoy the “Bourbon-matured” style of Glenmorangie or Balvenie but want the specific, weighted mouthfeel that only Aberlour can provide.
