Amrut Bagheera Indian Single Malt Whisky (500ml)
Volume: 500ml. ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: India
The Whisky
Amrut Bagheera is a magnificent Indian single malt that prowls the line between tropical intensity and elegant sherry sophistication. Named after the iconic black panther (Bagheera in Hindi) of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book,” this expression is a tribute to the mysterious and graceful nature of the Mysore forests. Bottled at 46% ABV, Bagheera is crafted from a unique marriage of 99% unpeated and 1% peated Indian six row barley. This “homeopathic” touch of peat doesn’t overwhelm the spirit but instead acts as a seasoning, adding a legendary depth to the profile.
The spirit is initially matured in ex-Bourbon barrels before undergoing a generous finishing period in the finest Oloroso Sherry casks. Due to the high altitude maturation in Bangalore, the “Angels’ Share” is a staggering 12% per year—roughly 3.5 times faster than in Scotland. This creates a “dark” and remarkably mature character that belies its non age statement status. The 2025 releases continue to showcase the vibrant, deep amber hue and the oily, silk like texture that has made Amrut a global powerhouse in the whisky world.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A rich and captivating start with salted caramel and dark chocolate leading the way. Beneath the initial sweetness, you’ll find an array of dried fruits—think sultanas, dates, and caramelised figs. As it breathes, sophisticated notes of sandalwood and light floral honey emerge, with just a “whisper” of distant woodsmoke.
Palate: Silky and full bodied. The palate is a fruity affair dominated by stewed plums, ripe peaches, and orange zest. The middle ground is creamy, where vanilla shortbread meets a subtle, savoury oak phenol. The tiny fraction of peated malt makes its presence felt here, providing a controlled, earthy backbone that perfectly balances the sherry sweetness.
Finish: Long, warming, and remarkably complex. The finish winds down with lingering oak, dark cocoa, and toasted chestnuts, leaving a final dry trail of sweet peat smoke and a touch of leathery spice.
The Distillery
Founded in 1948—the same year as independent India—Amrut Distilleries is the true pioneer of Indian single malt. Located in the tropical city of Bangalore, the distillery sits at over 3,000 feet above sea level. This unique climate is their “secret ingredient”; the intense heat causes the oak pores to open wider, accelerating the interaction between wood and spirit. Interestingly, Amrut chooses to avoid automation in their distillery to provide local employment, meaning every bottle is a product of human craftsmanship. The word “Amrut” translates from Sanskrit as “Nectar of the Gods,” a title justified by the hundreds of international awards they have secured since their global debut in 2004.
Overall Review
Amrut Bagheera is widely praised as a “Stellar Indian malt” that offers the complexity of a well aged Speyside with a unique tropical twist. Critics frequently highlight its incredible mouthfeel and the masterful integration of its subtle peat and rich sherry finish.
