Ardbeg BizarreBQ is a limited-edition Islay single malt that takes inspiration from the world of barbecue. It’s a unique and experimental expression from Ardbeg, a distillery known for its heavily peated and smoky whiskies.

The creation of BizarreBQ involved a collaboration between Ardbeg’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden, and renowned grill master Christian Stevenson, also known as DJ BBQ. This partnership aimed to capture the essence of barbecue in a whisky, resulting in a fascinating combination of flavours.

BizarreBQ is matured in a combination of double-charred oak casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, and unique “BBQ casks.” These BBQ casks are thought to be ex-bourbon barrels that have been heavily charred, imparting a distinctive smoky and charred character to the whisky. It’s bottled at 50.9% alc/vol, retaining its intensity and full flavour.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is a complex medley of smoky and savory notes. Charcoal and soot mingle with smoky wood, aromatic herbs, and spices. Toffee, hickory-smoked ham, and cinnamon-dusted espresso add sweetness and depth. With a splash of water, bright citrus aromas, fennel, aniseed, grilled artichokes, and seared meat emerge.

Palate: The palate is lively and full-bodied, with an initial burst of spice reminiscent of chili-marinated BBQ ribs. The smokiness is intense, evoking flame-grilled steak, chili oil, cured leather, and clove. Ginger, aniseed, and tar add further complexity, along with a distinct woodsmoke edge.

Finish: The finish is long and powerful, with the smoky and spicy notes lingering. Grilled artichoke, black olives, and a sooty note slowly fade, leaving a lasting impression.
