The Whisky
Discover a bold and unconventional side of Speyside with the Auchroisk 12 Year Old (Signatory 100 Proof Edition #52). Distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2025, this 700ml expression is a highlight of the 100 Proof series, which revitalises the historic British standard of 57.1% ABV. This specific edition features a rare and vibrant cask recipe: a marriage of First-Fill Amarone Hogsheads and Refill Hogsheads.
While Auchroisk is typically known for its light, “nutty” character, the influence of the Amarone casks—a powerful Italian dry red wine—transforms the spirit into something far more exotic and muscular. The first-fill Amarone wood provides a deep, pinkish-gold hue and a unique tannic structure, while the refill hogsheads ensure the distillery’s delicate barley notes are preserved. As with all Signatory icons, it is non-chill filtered and natural in colour.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A striking and fruit forward bouquet. You are greeted by the distinct Amarone influence of dried cranberries, pomegranate, and red currants, layered over the distillery’s signature hazelnut and vanilla. As it opens, a floral sweetness of rose petals and honeyed malt emerges, creating a sophisticated and “summery” aroma.
Palate: The arrival is intense and oily, carrying the weight of the 57.1% ABV with ease. It delivers a burst of red cherry jam and pink grapefruit, which transitions into a mid-palate of creamy almond paste and white chocolate. The wine influence adds a sophisticated “dryness”—think bitter cocoa and grape skin—which perfectly balances the natural sweetness of the Speyside spirit.
Finish: Long, elegant, and slightly drying. The finish lingers with cinnamon spice and tart red berries, finally tapering off with a savoury flourish of toasted oak and a hint of herbal tea.
The Cask
The use of Amarone Hogsheads is a bold choice for Auchroisk. Amarone is an Italian wine made from grapes that have been dried (passito) to concentrate their sugars and flavours. A unique factual detail: The casks previously held wine that is famously high in alcohol and tannin, which imparts a “vinous” and spicy depth to whisky that standard Sherry or Bourbon casks cannot replicate. In this 12 year old release, the Amarone wood acts as a “stiffener,” giving this often overlooked Speysider a robust, textured personality.
Overall Review
The Auchroisk 12 Year Old Amarone Finish Edition #52 is globally reviewed as a “creative and successful departure” for the distillery. Critics have lauded its unique red-fruit profile and the way the high proof delivery allows the wine tannins to shine, marking it as a mandatory purchase for enthusiasts looking for a Speyside malt that breaks the traditional mold.
