The Whisky
Experience the raw, “brawny” power of Speyside with the Balmenach 9 Year Old 2016 (Signatory Vintage 100 Proof Edition #57). This 700ml single malt is a rare solo appearance from a distillery that is almost exclusively reserved for world class blends. Part of Signatory’s acclaimed “100 Proof” series, it is bottled at the historical British Imperial benchmark of 57.1% ABV.
Distilled in 2016 and matured for nine years, Edition #57 is a full term maturation in 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Butts. Balmenach is famous for its heavy, muscular spirit produced using traditional “worm tub” condensers. When this “oily” distillate meets first fill sherry wood, it creates a “sherry-soaked gym vest” of a dram—intense, energetic, and built with remarkable structural weight.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Thick and decadent. You are greeted by a heavy wave of treacle fudge and blackberry jam, underpinned by the floral scent of heather honey. As it opens, the high proof reveals more aggressive notes of cracked black pepper, mocha, and polished leather, with a hint of dried cranberries adding a tart, complex edge.
Palate: The arrival is “muscular” and immediate. It delivers a rich surge of rum soaked sultanas and molasses, which transitions into a mid-palate of dark chocolate and toasted hazelnuts. Despite the 57.1% ABV, the texture remains velvety, layering clove spiked caramel over a bright, zesty flash of candied orange peel and malty biscuits.
Finish: Long, warming, and satisfyingly “grippy.” The finish lingers with sherry soaked fruitcake and earthy oak spice, finally tapering off with a final flourish of bitter cocoa and a hint of seasoned oak.
The Distillery
Balmenach, located in the rugged Cromdale hills of Speyside, was founded in 1824 by James MacGregor. A unique factual detail: Balmenach was one of the first distilleries to be licensed after the Excise Act of 1823, but it remains one of the most “enigmatic” because it has no regular official single malt bottling. It is a “workhorse” distillery, highly prized by blenders for its heavy, “meaty” character. This is achieved through the use of copper worm tubs for cooling the spirit vapors, a traditional method that reduces copper contact and leaves more “weight” and savory sulfur compounds in the final whisky—perfect for standing up to heavy Oloroso maturation.
Overall Review
The Balmenach 9 Year Old 100 Proof Edition #57 is globally reviewed as a “thunderous Speyside dram,” praised for its incredible intensity and value. Critics have lauded its “rich, dark-fruit depth and peppery spice,” marking it as a mandatory purchase for fans of the “100 Proof” series and those who want to see the brawny side of Speyside that usually hides behind the scenes.
