Signatory Vintage are an independent bottler founded in 1988 by Andrew and Brian Symington. The name ‘Signatory’ was derived from the initial intention to find a person of suitable standing to sign the labels for bottles drawn from a single cask. The first cask bottled was a 1968 Glenlivet which quickly sold through long before any suitable signee could be found.

The Benrinnes Distillery first produced spirit back in 1826 and was known originally between 1974 and 2007 for producing a partially triple distilled spirit. The distillery itself has been through a tough time, fires and floods have meant it has been rebuilt a number of times and been through a few owners. The distillery is now owned by Diageo and it is used for their well known blends. It was first well known though for producing spirit for use in Crawford’s blended whiskies and was known for its 15 year old vintage.

This single malt whisky was distilled in 2011 at the Benrinnes distillery on before being placed in 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Butts and left to mature for 13 years. In 2024 it was bottled at 57.1% alc/vol as part of the Signatory Vintage 100 Proof Collection.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich sherry notes, with prominent dried fruit aromas like raisins, figs, and dates. Hints of sweet spice, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Underlying nutty notes, like toasted almonds and perhaps a touch of hazelnut. Subtle hints of dark chocolate and polished leather, adding complexity.

Palate: Full-bodied and intense, with a velvety and slightly oily texture. Dominant sherry influence, bringing a sweet and syrupy character, but balanced with a savoury edge. Flavours of dark fruitcake, candied orange peel, and a medley of Christmas spices. The characteristic “meaty” note of Benrinnes is present, adding depth and umami. Well-integrated oak notes provide structure, along with a subtle hint of bitterness.

Finish: Long and warming, with a lingering sweetness and a spicy dryness. The sherry notes persist, evolving into a more pronounced spicy character (black pepper, ginger). A hint of dark chocolate and espresso emerges, adding richness. The oaky notes contribute to a drying finish, with a subtle tannic grip.
