Volume: 700ml ABV: 50% Age: 16 Years Old Country: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Panama
The Rum
Step into a world of pure, unadulterated spirit with the Cadenhead’s Classic Caribbean Rum 16 Year Old. This limited edition 2025 release is a masterclass in independent bottling, hailing from Scotland’s oldest and most respected name in the craft, Wm. Cadenhead Ltd. Bottled at a robust 50% ABV, this expression represents a significant step up from the standard Classic range. It is a carefully curated marriage of rums from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Panama, each aged for a minimum of 16 years.
True to the Cadenhead ethos, this rum is entirely natural—non-chill filtered, free from added sugars, and containing zero artificial colouring. The extra age and 100 proof strength allow the intricate secondary characteristics of the diverse Caribbean stills to shine. Expect a “Christmas in a bottle” experience, where the high-ester “funk” of Jamaican pot stills meets the deep, molasses-driven weight of Guyanese Demerara rums, all rounded by the elegant, fruit forward profile of matured Bajan spirit.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Deep and indulgent. The initial hit is rich with Russian truffles, salted caramel, and dulce de leche. As it breathes, sophisticated notes of poached pears and raspberry coulis emerge, balanced by an earthy hint of gorse bush and warming cassia bark.
Palate: The mouthfeel is thick and oily, coating the tongue with molasses and demerara sugar. It evolves into a complex tapestry of dark chocolate, raisins, and tobacco leaf. There is a noticeable “chewiness” to the spirit, revealing hints of pineapple, cardamom, and black liquorice that speak to its long maturation.
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming. The finish tapers off with a lingering trail of astringent oak spice and cocoa powder, leaving a final, sweet impression of tawny port and stewed apricots.
The Distillery
While Wm. Cadenhead Ltd is not a distillery itself, they are Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, established in 1842. Based in Campbeltown, the company is owned by the legendary J & A Mitchell & Co. (proprietors of Springbank). A unique factual detail: Cadenhead’s is one of the only bottlers in the world that continues to mature its rum stocks in the cool, maritime climate of Campbeltown. This “continental aging” creates a slower, more delicate interaction with the wood compared to tropical aging, resulting in a refined elegance that is a hallmark of the Cadenhead rum range.
Overall Review
The Cadenhead’s Classic 16 Year Old is widely reviewed as a “triumph of blending,” praised for its incredible value and honest, additive free profile. Critics globally have hailed it as a mandatory purchase for rum purists who demand complexity, high ABV, and authentic Caribbean character.
