The Caol Ila 1996 19 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Prayer #02 is a rare and exceptional Islay single malt that embodies the classic characteristics of Caol Ila with the added complexity of a long maturation in a refill hogshead. Distilled in 1996 at Caol Ila Distillery, this whisky spent 19 years maturing in a single refill hogshead before being bottled in 2015 by Kingsbury & Co. of Aberdeen. The bottling was done on behalf of Whisky Talk Fukuoka, Japan’s oldest whisky festival, and had an outturn of just 253 bottles.

Caol Ila is renowned for its heavily peated single malts with a distinctive maritime influence. The combination of peat smoke and sea salt is a hallmark of the distillery, and this expression beautifully showcases these characteristics, enhanced by the long maturation in a refill hogshead. Refill casks, having held whisky previously, allow the distillery’s character to shine through while adding subtle layers of complexity.

This Caol Ila 19 Year Old is bottled at a cask strength of 55.4% alc/vol, preserving its full flavour and intensity. It’s non-chill filtered and has no added colour, ensuring a pure and unadulterated taste experience.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is a captivating blend of peat smoke, sea salt, and a subtle sweetness. Notes of ripe orchard fruits, like apple and pear, mingle with the smoky and maritime notes, creating a complex and inviting aroma.

Palate: The palate is full bodied and oily, with a burst of peat smoke followed by a wave of sweetness. Flavours of honey, vanilla, and spices intertwine with the smoky notes, creating a harmonious balance. The higher ABV adds a warming sensation without being overpowering.

Finish: The finish is exceptionally long and lingering, with the peat smoke and sweetness slowly fading to reveal subtle notes of oak, leather, and a hint of dark chocolate.
