The Craigellachie distillery was opened in 1891 by the Craigellachie Distillery Company Ltd and was mainly used for producing White Horse blended whisky. In 2004 they released their first single malt aged 14 years. The distillery is now currently owned by John Dewar and Sons and they collect the water for making whisky from a spring on Little Conval Hill. The distillery also uses worm tubs style condensers for their stills, this allows for the new make spirit to retain more of a sulphurous and meaty character. With this malt whisky you can expect perfume, sweetness and spice with a hint of mint and freshly cut lawn.

Scotch Whisky is known the world-over by the Brand names of large blending companies. These blends are the mixture of the products of various distilleries which were originally independent family owned units. Until the middle of the 20th century there were many small firms that bottled and sold the pure product of the local distilleries. Since Victorian times the firm of William Cadenhead has provided this service.However a diminution of public interest caused the small bottling companies to close down. Only a small handful of distilleries still remain in the ownership of their founding families and even fewer of the bottling companies remain active, William Cadenhead is one of the notable survivors.

This independent bottle by Cadenhead has been matured in ex Bourbon oak then in 2021 was transferred to 100% port casks for a long finish. Bottled in 2023 at 46% alc/vol with no chillfiltration and no added colouring.

Official Tasting Notes

Nose: Praline and dark chocolate, alongside toffee and orange liqueur.

Palate: Sweet spiced notes of gingerbread, alongside stewed plums and cola flavoured sweets.

Finish: Long sweet and spiced finish of crystalised ginger, brazil nuts and black liquorice.
