The Edradour Distillery is situated in Perthshire which has been famous through the years for its small farm distilleries but now Edradour distillery is the last man (or lady) standing. It once boasted to be Scotland’s smallest distillery but after an expansion due to demand it is now thought of as Scotland’s Little Gem. The production, which also makes the whisky so unique was once 600 litres per year but now it can produce up to 160,000 litres per year. The name Edradour coming from the Gaelic ‘Edred dobhar’ meaning ‘the stream of King Edred’ who we believe may have been Pictish chieftain in the Dark Ages or a Roman legionnaire who liked this very delicious malt whisky. The distillery was founded in 1825 by local farmers and is currently owned by Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky who purchased the distillery in 2002 from Pernod Ricard. You should expect a creamy malt whisky with hints of mint, nuts and usually has a port or sherry influence.
The Edradour Aged 25 Years Highland Single Malt Batch No. 2 is a highly sought-after limited edition release from one of Scotland’s smallest and most traditional distilleries. Matured for a quarter of a century entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. This is a hallmark of Edradour, known for producing robust, sherry-influenced whiskies. The first-fill nature of the casks means they impart a rich, intense sherry character. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 55.6% alc/vol. This preserves the full intensity and depth of the whisky, without dilution. It is non-chill-filtered and has natural colouring, maintaining the whisky’s authentic character. Batch No. 2 consists of seven casks, resulting in a total of 2,332 bottles. This small outturn adds to its exclusivity. Distilled in 1998 and bottled on May 16, 2024. Presented in Edradour’s distinctive “Ibisco” decanters with a picture of the distillery on the label, and it comes in a substantial wooden box. The label itself is even made from barley grain used in the whisky’s production!
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Intensely aromatic, with layers of dried fruits (raisins, dates, figs), rich dark chocolate, old leather, and polished wood. The sherry influence brings deep sweetness with hints of molasses, spice, and espresso.
Palate: Full-bodied and luxurious. Initial sweetness of sherry-soaked fruits is balanced by notes of dark toffee, spiced nuts, black pepper, treacle, and a subtle smokiness, all wrapped in a smooth, velvety texture. Some reviews specifically mention notes of toffee-apples, orange peels, Medjool dates, and caramel. It’s often described as “liquid Christmas cake.”
Finish: Long and warming, with sweet and spicy notes gradually giving way to a gentle oaky dryness and a lingering hint of sherry richness. The complexity reflects its age, leaving a lasting impression of sophistication.
Overall: The Edradour 25 Year Old Highland Single Malt Batch No. 2 is considered a superb example of a well-aged, sherry-matured Highland single malt, highly regarded by collectors and connoisseurs for its depth of flavour and rarity. One reviewer even stated it was “better than batch 1 – incredible flavour and very long finish – everything anybody would want in a sherry bomb.”
