The Edradour Distillery sits in Perthshire which has been famous through the years for its small farm distilleries but now Edradour distillery is the last man (or lady) standing. It boasts to be Scotland’s smallest distillery and not just in size but in production which also makes the whisky so unique. The output from this distillery was once 600 litres per year but now it can produce up to 90,000 litres per year.
The name Edradour coming from the Gaelic ‘Edred dobhar’ meaning ‘the stream of King Edred’ who we believe may have been Pictish chieftain in the Dark Ages or a Roman legionnaire who liked this very delicious malt whisky. The distillery was founded in 1825 by local farmers and is currently owned by Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky who purchased the distillery in 2002 from Pernod Ricard. You should expect a creamy malt whisky with hints of mint, nuts and usually has a port or sherry influence.
This limited edition single cask single malt was commission in 2010 by our Director Craig Merson. The spirit, the barrel, and the location in the Edradour warehouse were all selected by Craig. Over a decade the barrel has been well care for and visited time and time again. In 2020 the liquid was sampled and it was to be decided that the liquid was to be bottled, it was just perfect. The location for the bottling was a whisky club in Australia that didn’t eventuate, The Flight Club.
The Flight Club was to be established to showcase single cask bottling at its finest and provide access to casks that would ordinarily be unavailable in the Australian market. This bottle will NEVER be repeated and is one of a kind.
This single malt whisky was distilled in 2010 at the Edradour distillery before being placed in a single ex Oloroso Sherry Butt and left to mature for 10 years. In 2021 it was bottled at 58.2% abv as part of the Whisky Company’s private collection. Single cask Edradour is now becoming rarer and rarer and this 2010 aged for 10 years will be hard to source over the next decade at least. It is a perfect single cask sherry matured whisky. Only 306 bottles were produced.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Milk chocolate, raisins, coffee, dates, black cherries, a hint of tobacco and new leather, soft oak.
Palate: Dark fruits, leather, old cigar boxes, coffee, hits of warm alcohol (a little mouth numbing in a good way), dark chocolate.
Finish: Long and mouth-coating, plum jam, dark chocolate.
There are not many exceptional sherry cask matured whiskies about at the moment. This is brilliant, and very memorable. You’ll need at least three bottles as one one bottle with not be enough. One to drink, one to share and one to keep for that rainy day!
