The Whisky
The Edradour 2012 Aged 12 Years (Michael Eppan Pinot Noir Cask) is an exquisite Highland malt that highlights the delicate side of the distillery’s heavy spirit. Distilled in 2012 and matured for over a decade, this expression underwent a prestigious secondary maturation in Pinot Noir wine casks sourced from the celebrated Michael Eppan estate in the Alto Adige region of Italy. Bottled at 48.2% ABV, it is presented in its natural, ruby tinted amber colour and is non-chill filtered.
This 2025 release is part of a specific collaboration designed to pair the “sweet and savoury” Edradour distillate with the light, aromatic, and red fruit forward profile of Italian Pinot Noir. Inside information suggests that the 12-year aging period allowed the spirit to fully absorb the elegant wine notes, resulting in a complex malt that balances creamy maltiness with bright summer berries.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Soft and incredibly fragrant. You are greeted with aromas of fresh strawberries and raspberries, followed by a delicate floral note of rose petals. As it opens, a hint of creamy vanilla and toasted malt provides a solid Highland base.
Palate: The mouthfeel is silky and medium bodied. It opens with sweet red cherry and cranberry flavours, which are quickly complemented by a touch of white pepper and oak spice. Mid-palate, notes of Turkish delight and milk chocolate emerge, creating a beautifully balanced sweetness.
Finish: Long, elegant, and fruit driven. The finish lingers with the tartness of red grape skins and summer fruits, finally drying out with a soft, nutty oakiness and a final whisper of clove.
The Distillery
Edradour, located in a picturesque valley near Pitlochry, is one of Scotland’s most iconic and traditional distilleries. Founded in 1825, it famously operated as the smallest distillery in the country for over a century. A unique factual detail: Edradour continues to use an ancient Morton refrigerator to cool its wort—one of the last of its kind in the world—which contributes to the unique “meaty” and oily character of the spirit. This robustness is exactly what allows Edradour to take on such a high level of influence from delicate wine casks like Pinot Noir without losing its distillery identity.
Overall Review
The Edradour 12 Year Old Michael Eppan Pinot Noir Cask is widely reviewed as one of the most elegant entries in the Michael Eppan series. Critics praise its “crystalline” fruit character and exceptional balance, making it a highly recommended choice for those who enjoy a lighter, more vinous Highland single malt.
