The Whisky
Step into the “metropolitan” spirit of the Lowlands with the Glasgow 1770 Peated – Rich & Smoky. This award-winning single malt represents a bold departure from typical light Lowland styles, acting as one-third of the distillery’s core Signature Range. Distilled in traditional copper pot stills named “Tara” and “Mhairi,” this expression is crafted with barley peated to 50PPM using aromatic heather rich peat from the Scottish Highlands.
The “Rich & Smoky” profile is achieved through a meticulous double maturation process: the spirit is first aged in 200L Virgin American White Oak barrels before being finished for 8 to 12 months in 250L Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry hogsheads. Bottled at 46% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and natural in colour, presenting a deep bronze or “burnt amber” hue derived entirely from the wood.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A “bold and brash” opening of sweet heather smoke and rich toffee. You are greeted by notes of vibrant vanilla, dried dark fruits, and cracked black peppercorn spice, with subtle, intriguing hints of flamed orange zest and chimney wood.
Palate: The mouthfeel is rich and oily, delivering a complex tapestry of tobacco leaf and cacao nibs. The primary sweetness of dark toffee and forest berries macerated in brown sugar is balanced by a background of sweet soft peat and gentle earthy undertones of sage and wet soil.
Finish: Long, smooth, and elegantly warming. The finish lingers with decadent notes of salted caramel, liquorice, and macadamia nuts, finally tapering off with a persistent spice and soft, ashy smoke.
The Distillery
The Glasgow Distillery Company, founded in 2014, holds the distinction of being the first single malt distillery to open in Glasgow in over 100 years. The name “1770” is a tribute to the founding date of the city’s original distillery at Dundashill. While Glasgow once boasted over 30 working distilleries, the industry vanished from the city for over a century until this modern revival. Today, the distillery is famous for its flavour forward strategies, utilising slow distillations and a dedicated wood program to produce spirits that taste significantly more mature than their actual years.
Overall Review
The Glasgow 1770 Peated is globally reviewed as a “sophisticated and balanced treaty between smoke and sherry”. It has earned multiple Gold Medals—including at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Whisky Competition—for its outstanding character. Critics have lauded its “oily, waxy tactility” and “BBQ sauce” smokiness, marking it as a mandatory purchase for those who enjoy the in
