The Whisky
Return to the roots of the city’s distilling revival with the Glasgow 1770 The Original – Fresh & Fruity. As the flagship expression and inaugural release of the distillery, this single malt defines the house style: approachable, vibrant, and deceptively complex. It is crafted using the finest concerto malted barley and the pure water of Loch Katrine.
This expression is double matured to maximise its fruit forward character. It is first aged in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before undergoing a finishing period of approximately six months in fresh virgin American white oak barrels. Bottled at 46% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and presented at its natural “amber gold” colour, ensuring the full “waxy tactility” of the spirit is preserved.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Bright and evocative. You are greeted by dried dark fruits with tropical undertones, immediately followed by the fresh scent of freshly cut grass and oak. Subtle hints of biscuit and vanilla cream soda add a comforting, dessert-like sweetness to the bouquet.
Palate: Silky and “delectably sweet”. It coats the tongue with butterscotch and a creme brulee char, evolving into a mid-palate of freshly sliced pear, dried figs, and dates. Layers of sweet almond, honey, and creamy shortbread provide a rich, waxy mouthfeel that belies its non-age statement status.
Finish: Long, warming, and sophisticated. The finish lingers with the flavour of thickly spread orange marmalade and nutmeg, underpinned by a complex woodiness and a slight peppery spice that remains on the tongue.
The Distillery
The Glasgow Distillery Company, founded in 2014, was the first to bring single malt production back to the city in over 100 years. Their “The Original” expression uses an extremely slow distillation in small copper pot stills (named Tara and Mhairi) to produce a “dark fruit forward” new make spirit. With a minimum of 72 hours of fermentation, the distillery prioritises flavour development at every stage, resulting in a series of whiskies that have collectively won Gold Medals across major international competitions including the IWSC and San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Overall Review
The Glasgow 1770 The Original is globally reviewed as a “fantastic NAS” that punches far above its weight class. Critics have lauded its “very complex flavour and nose”—noting it as a top Scotch bargain that rivals much more expensive bottles. It is a mandatory purchase for those who enjoy the gentle fruitiness of a Lowland malt but want the added depth and “zing” provided by virgin oak finishing.
