Glen Scotia Aged 18 Years Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: 18 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Whisky
The Glen Scotia 18 Year Old is an exceptional example of Campbeltown’s “golden age” of distilling, refined for a modern audience. Bottled at 46% ABV, this award-winning single malt undergoes a meticulous “two-stage” maturation process. It begins its journey for 17 years in a combination of refill Bourbon barrels and refill American Oak hogsheads, before the Master Blender vats the liquid into first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks for a final 12-month finishing period.
This 18 year old expression is often referred to by the distillery team as the “refined sibling” of the range; it retains the signature Glen Scotia maritime salt and oily texture but polishes them with nearly two decades of wood interaction. Inside information suggests that this specific age statement is becoming increasingly rare due to high global demand for Campbeltown malts, making the 2025 batches highly sought after. It remains non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, presenting a deep, honeyed amber that speaks to its long slumber in the Atlantic-facing warehouses.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Elegant and complex. Immediate notes of crisp orchard fruits (red apples and pears) are met by a classic Campbeltown sea spray. Beneath the surface, the Sherry influence reveals itself through aromas of honey, floral notes, and a hint of salted caramel, followed by a delicate, spicy oak undertone.
Palate: The mouthfeel is wonderfully thick and oily. It opens with a burst of sweet fruit—apricots and pineapple—which is quickly grounded by savoury notes of roasted hazelnuts and baked gingerbread. Mid-palate, the signature maritime saltiness emerges, perfectly balanced by the rich, syrupy influence of the Oloroso finish and a touch of brown sugar.
Finish: Long and incredibly warming. The finish lingers with dry tannins from the oak, accompanied by a trail of dark chocolate, ginger, and a final, distinctively saline coastal breeze.
The Distillery
Glen Scotia is one of only three remaining distilleries in Campbeltown, a region that was once home to over 30 distilleries and known as the “Whisky Capital of the World.” Founded in 1832, the distillery still retains its original character, including the dunnage warehouse where the 18 year old is matured. A unique factual detail: Glen Scotia uses a water source from Crosshill Loch, which sits deep in the heart of the peninsula and has a high mineral content that contributes to the spirit’s famously robust and oily character. In 2021, Glen Scotia was named Distillery of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, cementing its status as a world class producer of traditional, handcrafted malts.
Overall Review
The Glen Scotia 18 Year Old is widely reviewed as one of the best “high age” value whiskies in Scotland, praised for its perfect balance of coastal salt and sherry sweetness. Critics frequently highlight its incredible texture and “old school” Campbeltown soul.
