The Glencadam distillery was founded in 1825 and produces 1.5 million litres of spirit annually. The distillery has two stills and is situated near the River Esk in the Highland region of Scotland. It takes the water for its spirit from nearby springs in the surrounding green hills. The current owners are Angus Dundee plc who purchased the distillery in 2003 and also own the Tomintoul distillery in Speyside. The whisky produced at this distillery is an important component of Ballentine’s blends. Expect floral with notes of orange and citrus fruits. It has a refined dark oak undertone and is an elegant single malt whisky.

Scotch Whisky is known the world-over by the Brand names of large blending companies. These blends are the mixture of the products of various distilleries which were originally independent family owned units. Until the middle of the 20th century there were many small firms that bottled and sold the pure product of the local distilleries. Since Victorian times the firm of William Cadenhead has provided this service.However a diminution of public interest caused the small bottling companies to close down. Only a small handful of distilleries still remain in the ownership of their founding families and even fewer of the bottling companies remain active, William Cadenhead is one of the notable survivors.

This independent bottle by Cadenhead has been initially matured in ex Bourbon oak 25% and ex Oloroso Sherry casks 75%. Is has been matured for no less than 10 years and bottled at 46% Alc/Vol.  There’s been no chill-filtration and no added colouring.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Sherry influence is evident to begin with, lots of dates and raisins with leather and cinnamon but there’s some really interesting tropical fruit notes here too. Tinned fruit cocktail, melon and pineapple as well as soft caramel and damp oak.

Palate: Fruity and bold, honey sweetness, cereals, stemmed ginger, raisins, plums and hints of strawberry with maple syrup.

Finish: Medium to long with old oak and soft spices, there may even be a smidge of peat smoke there too which is rather delightful.
