GlenDronach Ode To The Dark Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
The Glendronach “Ode to the Dark” is a limited edition single malt and a highlight from the distillery’s Master’s Anthology series, which celebrates their mastery of sherry cask maturation. This particular expression, crafted by Master Blender Rachel Barrie, is matured exclusively in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks, known for imparting rich, sweet, and deeply complex flavours. It is bottled at a high strength of 50.8% alc/vol and is non-chill filtered, ensuring its natural character and full body are preserved.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A powerful and complex aroma with notes of mocha, black cherry, and dark chocolate. This is followed by hints of crème brûlée, raisins, brown sugar, and ginger. There’s an overall sense of rich, decadent sweetness.
Palate: The mouthfeel is velvety and full bodied. It delivers a rich experience with layers of smooth espresso, crème caramel, black grapes, and a distinct mint chocolate ganache. Other notes include dried fruits like plums and raisins, and a slight nuttiness.
Finish: The finish is long and robust, with a lingering sweetness and drying notes of cocoa, baking spices, and a hint of bitter almonds.
Situated in the Forgue valley, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire, in the Highland region of Scotland. This location is nestled among rolling hills, far from the main tourist routes. The GlenDronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice (after whom the 18 Year Old is named). It has a long and somewhat turbulent history, experiencing periods of closure and ownership changes. Notably, for much of the 20th century, it was owned by William Teacher & Sons (famous for Teacher’s Highland Cream blended Scotch), with much of its spirit destined for blends. A major turning point came in 2008 when it was acquired by an independent consortium led by Billy Walker, who championed its single malt bottlings and its commitment to sherry maturation. It was subsequently acquired by Brown-Forman (makers of Jack Daniel’s) in 2016.
