The Whisky
The GlenDronach “Ode to the Embers” is a poetic and deeply sherried expression that celebrates the distillery’s historical roots. Bottled at 46% ABV in a 700ml format, this non age statement release is a tribute to the era when the distillery was heated by coal fires, imparting a whisper of “embers” to the heavy Highland spirit. It is matured in a signature combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Spain, ensuring the classic “Sherry Monster” profile for which GlenDronach is world famous. “Ode to the Embers” was crafted by Master Blender Rachel Barrie to capture the atmosphere of a winter’s evening by a hearth. While GlenDronach is generally unpeated, this expression utilises specific casks that evoke a delicate, smouldering woodsmoke and toasted oak character, mimicking the “embers” of the past without the heavy medicinal notes of an Islay malt. It is non-chill filtered and bottled with its natural, deep copper colour.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and evocative. You are greeted by glazed cherries and dark bramble fruit, followed by the scent of toasted chestnuts and soft woodsmoke. As it breathes, notes of dark chocolate and orange oil emerge, wrapped in a blanket of sweet oak.
Palate: The mouthfeel is incredibly velvety and full. It opens with rich plum jam and spiced fruitcake, followed by a mid-palate of roasted walnuts and espresso beans. A gentle, warming smoulder of campfire embers runs through the liquid, balancing the intense sherry sweetness.
Finish: Long, warming, and sophisticated. The finish lingers with sultanas and dark treacle, finally fading into a final, savoury trail of lingering woodspice and a wisp of dry smoke.
The Distillery
The GlenDronach Distillery, nestled in the Valley of Forgue in the Aberdeenshire Highlands, was founded in 1826 and is one of Scotland’s oldest licensed distilleries. A unique factual detail: GlenDronach was the last distillery in Scotland to use direct coal fired stills, only converting to steam in 2005. This heritage is what “Ode to the Embers” seeks to replicate. The distillery is renowned for its “Saxony” style of maturation—using heavy, oily spirit that can withstand decades in high quality Spanish oak—resulting in a malt that is frequently compared to fine Cognac.
Overall Review
The GlenDronach Ode to the Embers is widely reviewed as a “triumph of atmosphere.” Critics praise its ability to integrate a subtle smoky element into the traditionally fruit heavy GlenDronach profile. It is considered a mandatory dram for fans of the distillery who want to experience a “lost” side of its history in a modern, refined bottling.
