GlenDronach Peated Port Wood Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
This peated GlenDronach celebrates the whisky produced in the early 1900’s at the distillery. Port casks were in abundance and the only source of fuel during this time was the burning of peat. The distillery used what it had to produce its whisky and it produced an exceptional peated port cask. Although we do not associate peated port cask whisky with the GlenDronach distillery it is nice to enjoy something a little different and pay respects to past distillers and distillery workers.
The GlenDronach distiller hand-selected and expertly combined port pipes from the Douro Valley in Portugal and the peated spirit has undergone a final maturation in these port pipes.
Rachel Barrie, The GlenDronach Whisky Maker, commented;
“The GlenDronach Peated Port Wood may be considered a surprising expression from this distillery but in keeping with historical styles. Peat imbues the spirit with regional notes of wood smoke and smouldering charcoal, layered over The GlenDronach’s archetypal fruitiness.
On the nose you can enjoy wild strawberries dusted with cinnamon sugar and crisp, tart cranberry juice, flooded with waves of Highland smoke, sweetening to a red berry compote, with rich, stewed barley and lingering, smouldering charcoal on the palate.”
Our Tasting Notes
Colour: Amber colour with pinkish highlights.
Nose: Ripe red berries with vanilla, plum jam and caramel. Hints of charred oak and fresh grain.
Taste: Lots of beautiful fruity flavours, oranges, peaches, plums and cranberries. Honey sweetness with stewed barley. The peat smoke is very subdued but there is a lovely earthiness about this dram.
Finish: Bitter notes of chocolate, charred oak and a little grassiness with some peppermint freshness.

Having enjoyed Glendronach’s other peated version of their already great whisky I thought I’d give this one a go. Unfortunately I found it to be a little too young for the port and peat to work themselves into a rounded flavour leaving a disappointing leathery taste (with some pepper and malt) after a promising nose of smoke and dark fruits, The finish is fleeting but does hold pleasant tobacco smoke. I found I enjoyed this dram slightly more a couple of weeks after opening and with a drop or two of water to enhance the background flavours.
All that said at the price it’d certainly work as a lower/mid priced entry to newcomers of peated whiskies. A solid 80/100
