The Whisky
The Hellyers Road 8 Year Old “The Journeyman” is a sophisticated Tasmanian single malt that serves as a tribute to the distillery’s global collaboration program. Bottled at 46.2% ABV in a convenient 200ml flask, this expression is designed for those who want a premium “tasting size” of Australia’s oldest operating whisky distillery. This whisky is a “Double Cask” creation, having spent its formative years in American Oak ex-Bourbon barrels before an extended secondary maturation in fine old Australian Tawny casks.
The name “The Journeyman” celebrates the distillery’s program of hosting international whisky makers who share knowledge and techniques on-site in Burnie. This cross-pollination of ideas is reflected in the liquid itself, which bridges the gap between traditional bourbon-matured sweetness and the deep, jammy complexity of Australian fortified wine. It is non-chill filtered and natural in colour, preserving the oily texture produced by Hellyers Road’s unique, tall stills.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Highly aromatic with a dessert-like profile. You are greeted by ginger snaps and baking spices, layered over buttery fruit toast. Deeper notes of sandalwood and soft tobacco leaf add an unexpected and welcome complexity.
Palate: Rich and fruit forward. Initial flavours of Red Delicious toffee apples and fresh plums are preserved in syrup. Mid-palate, it evolves into dark chocolate and Medjool dates, balanced by firm oak tannins that prevent the sweetness from becoming cloying.
Finish: Long, warming, and intricate. The finish lingers with dark fruit oils, a touch of cocoa, and a building warmth that remains smooth across the palate.
The Distillery
Located in Burnie, Tasmania, Hellyers Road is Australia’s oldest operating whisky distillery. Founded in 1997 by a cooperative of dairy farmers, it was born from a “bold and audacious” move to diversify from milk production into single malt. A unique factual detail: The distillery uses custom designed, very tall stills that are more akin to those found in the Scottish Highlands (like Glenmorangie), which produce an exceptionally light, floral, and elegant spirit. Despite its dairy roots, Hellyers Road has become one of the most awarded distilleries in the world, recently cleaning up at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards.
Overall Review
The Hellyers Road 8 Year Old Journeyman is widely reviewed as a “shining example” of the Tasmanian style. Critics praise its ability to balance the spicy influence of Tawny wood with the distillery’s signature elegant spirit. The 200ml format is frequently cited as the perfect way to explore this high end brand without committing to a full sized bottle.
