Kilkerran Aged 12 Years Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 2025 Release (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: 12 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Whisky
The Kilkerran 12 Year Old (2025 Release) is the definitive flagship of the Glengyle Distillery and a crown jewel of the Campbeltown region. Bottled at a precise 46% alc/vol, this edition continues the distillery’s commitment to traditional, non-industrial craftsmanship. The 2025 vatting maintains its celebrated composition of 70% ex-Bourbon and 30% ex-Sherry casks, a balance that allows the unique, lightly peated (12-15ppm) spirit to shine without being masked by wood.
Inside information for this year’s release suggests a particularly oily texture due to a slightly longer fermentation period, enhancing that famous “Campbeltown funk.” Unlike its more elusive older siblings, the 12 year old remains the “people’s dram”—an approachable yet deeply complex whisky that is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured. It is the perfect entry point for those looking to understand why the whisky world is currently obsessed with the revival of Glengyle.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Bright and inviting. Initial notes of sweet Turkish delight and pear drops are underscored by a subtle, earthy peat smoke—reminiscent of toasted marshmallows over a dying campfire. As it sits, zesty citrus and marzipan emerge, followed by a hint of honeycomb and aged oak.
Palate: The mouthfeel is remarkably oily and viscous. Vibrant lemon cheesecake and orange peel lead the charge, quickly transitioning into richer layers of butterscotch, vanilla bean, and digestive biscuits. A gentle peppery spice develops mid-palate, characteristic of the local maritime climate.
Finish: Long and satisfyingly dry. The velvet-smooth texture gives way to lingering embers of peat smoke, salted caramel, and a final, distinctive pinch of sea spray and lemon meringue.
The Distillery
Glengyle Distillery is a testament to perseverance. After being closed for nearly 80 years, it was triumphantly reopened in 2004 by the Mitchell family, the same lineage behind the legendary Springbank. Because the production at Glengyle only takes place for a few months each year—using the same dedicated team that operates Springbank—every drop of Kilkerran is essentially a “hand-made” product. A unique factual quirk: the distillery uses two distinct stills, a wide-necked wash still and a small spirit still, which are specifically designed to create a heavy, oil-rich distillate that ages gracefully over twelve years.
Overall Review
The 2025 bottling remains one of the best value for money whiskies in the world, successfully balancing coastal salt, gentle smoke, and orchard fruits. It is widely considered a “permashelf” staple for any serious collector who appreciates a complex, traditional malt.
