The Whisky
The Kilkerran 16 Year Old (2025 Release) represents the pinnacle of the Glengyle Distillery’s core range, and this year’s edition is arguably their most enticing yet. Bottled at a robust 46% alc/vol, the 2025 vintage marks a significant shift in character, featuring the highest sherry influence in the 16 year old’s history. This batch is composed of a meticulous marriage of 60% ex-Bourbon and 40% ex-Sherry casks, resulting in a remarkably “dark” and rich profile compared to previous years.
Unlike mass produced spirits, Kilkerran is produced in limited “batches,” with this 2025 release showcasing a deep mahogany hue and a weightier mouthfeel. Inside information suggests that this specific vatting was designed to bridge the gap between the bright, coastal 12 year old and the intense, peat heavy 8 year old Cask Strength series. It remains non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, preserving the authentic Campbeltown “funk” that collectors crave.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: An immediate invitation of rich prunes and marzipan, followed by a luxurious layer of orange infused dark chocolate. As it breathes, deeper notes of tobacco leaf, cigar box, and a faint whiff of dunnage floor emerge, balanced by a bright tropical touch of dried pineapple.
Palate: Vibrant and complex. The sherry influence shines through with maraschino cherry syrup and dates, while the bourbon casks provide a creamy vanilla and honeycomb backbone. You’ll find hints of star anise, liquorice, and a gentle, warming peat smoke that never overpowers the delicate fruit.
Finish: A long, drying, and coastal finish. Characteristic Campbeltown sea salt mingles with toasted hazelnuts and a surprising burst of mint and morello cherries, leaving a lingering trail of earthy, sooty smoke.
The Distillery
Glengyle Distillery is a true “phoenix” of the whisky world. Founded in 1872 by William Mitchell after a legendary quarrel with his brother (who ran Springbank), the distillery fell silent for nearly 80 years starting in 1925. In a historic move, it was revived in 2004 by the Mitchell family, making it one of only three active distilleries in Campbeltown and effectively saving the town’s status as an official Scotch Whisky region. Interestingly, because the “Glengyle” brand name was owned by a third party during its closure, the whisky is released under the name Kilkerran, derived from the Gaelic Ceann Loch Cilli Chiarain—the original name of the settlement that became Campbeltown.
Overall Review
The 2025 release is a masterclass in balance, offering a richer, more sherried depth that elevates the Kilkerran profile to new heights. Widely regarded by critics as a “must-buy,” it perfectly captures the rugged elegance of a 16 year old Campbeltown malt.
