Owned by the spirits powerhouse Diageo the Lagavulin Distillery has stood tall for many years, since 1816 to be exact. The distillery itself sits in the village of Lagavulin on the south side of the island Islay off Scotland’s West Coast. Most whisky connoisseurs name Lagavulin to be their first whisky that inspired them to follow whisky and an industry basked in mystery and wonder. The name Lagavulin is an anglicisation of Lag a’ Mhuilinn, the Scottish Gaelic for hollow of the mill.

The 2022 collection, drawn from some of Scotland’s most interesting, legendary distilleries and curated by Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson, portrays the otherworldly beings which have fiercely protected the heartlands of remote Scottish distilleries for an eternity, according to our ancient fables, and the mythical creatures come to life revealing their true characters. Drawn from renowned distilleries, the collection nods to the hidden gems that can be found in each corner of the Scottish terrain amongst the lochs and rugged highlands. The annual, carefully selected line-up highlights the diversity of our most treasured whisky reserves maturing in Scotland. Each whisky will be visually brought to life with heavily detailed illustrations and design work from renowned digital illustrator Ken Taylor. His striking signature style and interpretation of the mythical creatures takes cues from his portfolio of pop culture artwork.

Virgin oak casks, having never held whisky before, tend to impart a more pronounced oak influence, adding layers of spice and vanilla to the whisky. The refill casks contribute to the whisky’s complexity and balance. It’s bottled at a cask strength of 57.3% ABV, retaining its full flavour and intensity.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is classic Lagavulin, with a powerful smokiness and peat leading the way. It’s earthy and intense, but with a surprising freshness and hints of citrus, orange rind, and vanilla.

Palate: The palate is where the intensity ramps up. The heavily peated malt delivers a smoky dryness, but it’s balanced by a delightful sweetness and a superb overall balance. The higher ABV contributes to the whisky’s mouth-coating texture and long finish.

Finish: The finish is long and lingering, with waves of peat smoke and a crescendo of spice that leaves a lasting impression.
