Lagavulin Aged 16 Years Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 43% Age: 16 Years Old Country: Scotland
Lagavulin in Gaelic means ‘the mill in the hollow’. This distillery was the first distillery on Isaly to start to operate legally after many years of illegal distilling on the isalnd. It was officially opened in 1816 by John Johnston who was a member of a local illegal distilling clan.
The making of this whisky usually occurs slowly. The barley is smoked with peat longer than usual and the whisky is generally left to mature for 16 years before it’s ready to be bottled. The distillery is both old and modern and sits beside the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle near Port Ellen which was at one time home to the ‘Lord of the Isles’.
This distillery is linked with it’s whisky being mellow, peaty, smoky and full bodied.
We were once told that Johnny Depp (the actor) does not drink alcohol, however is fond of a glass of Lagavulin just to nose as he works a room at an awards show. Well if true we agree with Johnny Depp, this whisky smells amazing.
This whisky is the starting point for most whisky drinkers who are looking to explore the shores of Islay and discover peated whisky. It has peat smoke, it has a perfectly balanced sweetness and finishes with a dry finesse. Your journey of the whisky isle starts here.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep amber.
Nose: A typically full-on Lagavulin nose that also shows great finesse, with less ripe fruit than earlier bottlings. Bergamot scented wood-smoke surrounds a sophisticated complex of sweeter aromas; smooth and creamy toffee sauce on digestive biscuits with shavings of milk chocolate. Later, appetising lemon and white pepper notes. With water, the aromas embrace toasted cereal and take on a roasted, nutty quality but the fragrant smoke always returns.
Palate: Dusty, very sweet, then positively smoky, as with roasted chestnuts from a street vendor on a winter’s morning; Or a real-wood fired pizza with fresh pesto and pine kernels. Leaves the tongue tingling. Cleaner with water, which brings a smooth mouth feel and sophisticated smoke.
Finish: Long and smoky, with large amounts of exquisite smoke and a fragrant smoky aftertaste. Toasted sesame seeds and basil. Water brings out Indian spices (roasted cumin).
