Description
Laphroaig 10 Years Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 40% Age: 10 Years Old Country: Scotland
Situated on the rugged south coast of Islay, one of Scotland’s Inner Hebridean islands, renowned globally for its heavily peated whiskies. It’s nestled on the shore of Loch Indaal, near its famous neighbours Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Laphroaig was established in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, making it one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Its name, from Gaelic “Lag Bhròdhaig,” means “the hollow by the broad bay.” The distillery has a rich history of independent ownership, famously by Ian Hunter and his pioneering manager Bessie Williamson, before being acquired by larger spirits companies. Today, it is owned by Beam Suntory (part of Suntory Holdings, a Japanese multinational). As mentioned, it proudly holds a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III), having been his favourite Scotch whisky for many years. Laphroaig is famous for producing a distinctly heavy, medicinal, and intensely smoky peated single malt. Its unique flavour profile is a result of several traditional and specific production methods. Laphroaig is synonymous with bold, uncompromising, and distinctive Islay peat. Its whiskies are characterised by intense smoke, strong maritime notes (iodine, seaweed, salt), a phenolic or antiseptic quality, balanced by surprising hints of vanilla, fruit, and cream. It’s often described as a “love it or hate it” whisky, but it’s undeniably unique.
Laphroaig 10 Year Old is widely considered a benchmark for heavily peated single malts. It embodies the essence of Islay whisky, offering a bold and complex experience. Primarily matured in ex-Bourbon barrels made from American white oak. These casks impart notes of vanilla, caramel, and a subtle sweetness that helps to balance Laphroaig’s powerful peat. Typically bottled at 40% alc/vol in most markets (though higher strength versions, like the Cask Strength, exist). Often non-chill filtered for maximum flavour retention, though some older or regional bottlings might vary. It’s usually natural colour. The Laphroaig 10 Year Old has won numerous awards over the decades and holds a significant place in the whisky world. It famously carries a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III), indicating it’s supplied to the Royal Household.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: An immediate and powerful blast of peat smoke, often described with medicinal notes like iodine, bandages (TCP), and antiseptic. This is interwoven with the scent of seaweed, sea spray, and salty maritime air. Beneath the smoke, you can often find surprising hints of sweet vanilla, crème brûlée, and sometimes citrus or a malty sweetness. It’s complex and captivating.
Palate: Full-bodied, robust, and wonderfully oily, it coats the mouth. The intense, smoky peat dominates, but it’s quickly followed by a surprising sweetness – vanilla, toasted nuts, honey, or even subtle fruit (like candied pear). The briny, salty seaweed notes are very present, providing a powerful contrast. There’s a warming, spicy kick, with hints of black pepper or ginger.
Finish: Long, lingering, and very warming. The smoky, tarry, and medicinal notes persist for an extended period, slowly fading to a sweet seaweed afterglow and dry oak. It truly leaves a lasting impression.

Excellent example of Islay Scotch whisky, with strong but not entirely overpowering Peat Smoke, great for an experienced Scotch drinker or any whisky drinker who likes smoke. I would avoid if you’re new to whisky, unless you want to try something from Islay (ie. smokey).
