Description
Ledaig Hebridean Moon Aged 10 Years Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46.3% Age: 10 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Whisky
Ledaig Hebridean Moon is a historic milestone for the Tobermory Distillery, representing the first ever official distillery bottling of the Ledaig 10 Year Old at cask strength. Bottled at a powerful 58.8% ABV, this 2025 limited edition is a “love letter” to the Isle of Mull. It is specifically crafted from the very first spirit to flow through the distillery’s newest stills, which were installed in 2014, marking a decade of maturation in hand selected second-fill ex-Bourbon casks.
The “Hebridean Moon” is a significant departure from the distillery’s usual penchant for exotic wine finishes. By using refill bourbon wood, the Master Blender has allowed the raw, peated Ledaig spirit (35-40 PPM) to be the star. The name and packaging—featuring photography by island ambassador Gordon Buchanan—draw inspiration from the Baliscate Standing Stones, ancient megaliths near the distillery aligned with the lunar cycle. Where the standard 10-year-old is a “smoulder,” this release is a full throttle “fire,” amped up to 11 for the true peat enthusiast.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A very clean and potent peaty kick. Initial notes of seaweed, smoked barley husks, and lemon peel are followed by elegant floral overtones of orange blossom and birch wood. As it sits, softer notes of vanilla cream, chalk, and a hint of antiseptic emerge, balanced by a touch of menthol and fresh plaster.
Palate: The mouthfeel is thick, oily, and remarkably punchy. It explodes with lemon drizzle cake and candied fruit, quickly shifting into more savoury territory with fresh leather, tobacco leaf, and green walnuts. Underneath the heat lies a creamy sweetness of vanilla custard, punctuated by black pepper, star anise, and a hint of habanero chilli.
Finish: Long, warming, and intensely maritime. The smoke becomes more medicinal and earthy, lingering alongside salted caramel, winter spices, and a final citrus freshness. It leaves a dry, sooty trail of charred oak and sea spray.
The Distillery
Tobermory Distillery, located on the picturesque Isle of Mull, is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland, dating back to 1798. It is famous for its “split personality,” producing unpeated Tobermory for half the year and heavily peated Ledaig for the other. A unique factual detail for this release: the 2014 still replacement was a pivotal moment for the distillery, and Hebridean Moon is the first aged expression to showcase the specific copper contact and “heavy” distillate of these new stills. Furthermore, this bottling supports the local community, with a £20,000 donation made to the Mull and Iona Community Trust to help restore the island’s unique forest biodiversity.
Overall Review
Critics have hailed Hebridean Moon as the “definitive” Ledaig experience, praising its unadulterated cask strength power and elegant bourbon cask balance. It is widely reviewed as a “must-buy” for 2025, successfully bridging the gap between official core releases and the wild intensity of independent bottlings.
