The Whisky
The Ledaig Sinclair Series Rioja Cask Finish is a vibrant and rebellious island malt that serves as the opening chapter to Tobermory Distillery’s prestigious Sinclair Series. Bottled at a precise 46.3% ABV, this non-age statement (NAS) expression is a masterclass in “smoke and sun.” It begins its life as heavily peated barley (30-40 PPM) before undergoing an initial maturation in ex-Bourbon barrels. The magic happens during its finishing period, where the spirit is moved into hand selected Spanish Rioja wine casks, resulting in a stunning ruby gold hue and a unique collision of maritime peat and Mediterranean fruit.
Inside information reveals that this series is a tribute to the distillery’s founder, John Sinclair, and the specific choice of Rioja casks was inspired by the legendary Spanish Galleon that sank off the harbour of Tobermory over 400 years ago. While many red wine finishes can be polarising, the 2025 batches have been praised for their seamless integration, proving that the rugged, “dirty” smoke of Ledaig is the perfect partner for the elegant, tannic sweetness of Spanish Tempranillo grapes.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A captivating fusion of sweet and savoury. Initial aromas of Turkish Delight and rose petal jelly are balanced by a wave of coastal peat smoke and rich leather. As it opens, deeper notes of candied orange peel, dark chocolate, and a hint of black pepper emerge from the glass.
Palate: Creamy and incredibly full bodied. The palate is packed with almonds, barley sugar, and sweet malt, which quickly give way to the signature Ledaig “pepper.” This is followed by a burst of black raspberries, stewed plums, and cocoa, interspersed with warm cinnamon spice and a touch of freshly cut grass.
Finish: Lingering and complex. The smouldering woodsmoke and savoury peat remain on the tongue, slowly fading into a sweet trail of red fruits, salted caramel, and a refreshing spray of Atlantic sea salt.
The Distillery
Located in the colourful harbour town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, the Tobermory Distillery is a place of historic defiance. Founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, a local kelp merchant, the distillery was built despite fierce opposition from local authorities. Today, it remains the only distillery on the island and is unique for its “split personality.” For half the year, it produces the fruity, unpeated Tobermory malt; for the other half, it switches to the heavily peated, robust Ledaig (pronounced “Led-chig,” meaning “Safe Haven”). A factual quirk: the distillery’s small, unusually shaped stills with their high angled lyne arms are responsible for the heavy, oily character that makes Ledaig such a formidable partner for wine cask maturation.
Overall Review
The Ledaig Rioja Cask is widely considered one of the best value-for-money peated whiskies on the market, offering a sophisticated “smoky-sweet” profile that punches well above its price bracket. Critics consistently rate it as a bold, characterful alternative for Islay fans looking for something with a Mediterranean twist.
