The Whisky
Experience a historic milestone for Ayrshire with the Lochlea 6 Year Old, the distillery’s oldest age-statement whisky to date. Launched in January 2025 to celebrate Burns Night, this limited edition Lowland single malt marks the first major release curated by new Master Blender Jill Boyd, alongside Distillery Manager Darren McCormick. Bottled at a robust 50% ABV, this release is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, limited to just 2,500 bottles worldwide.
This 6-year-old expression was vatted from just six specific casks filled during the distillery’s inaugural year in 2018: three first-fill Bourbon barrels and three Oloroso Sherry butts. While Lochlea’s 5 year old predecessor leaned into PX Sherry sweetness, this 2025 release focuses on a sophisticated balance between the rich, spicy depth of Oloroso and the bright, creamy vanilla of bourbon wood. It is a “field-to-bottle” masterpiece that showcases the maturity of their estate-grown barley.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Indulgent and fruit-forward. You are greeted by aromas of sweet figs and juicy red grapes, perfectly integrated with a layer of milk chocolate and chocolate digestives. As it opens, a warming spice of cinnamon and ginger emerges, reminiscent of traditional fruit cake.
Palate: The mouthfeel is remarkably viscous and “chewy.” Initial notes of creamy panna cotta and honey are met by a savory backbone of malt biscuits and toasted pecans. Mid-palate, the sherry influence delivers dark cherries, raisins, and orange peel, balanced by the bourbon-led sweetness of vanilla custard.
Finish: Long, rich, and lingering. The finish carries Lochlea’s signature cereal character alongside silky tannins and dry cocoa powder. A final, refreshing lift of lemon zest and orange marmalade leaves a bright, clean impression.
The Distillery
Lochlea is an independent, family-owned “farm distillery” located in the heart of Ayrshire. It occupies the very land where the legendary Scottish poet Robert Burns lived and worked from 1777 to 1784. A unique factual detail: Lochlea is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to be truly self-sufficient, growing 100% of its own barley (exclusively the Laureate variety) on-site. This total control over the raw ingredients, combined with a slow fermentation process to promote copper contact, results in a spirit that is heavier and more robust than the light, floral style typically associated with the Lowland region.
Overall Review
The Lochlea 6 Year Old is globally reviewed as a “triumph of farm-to-bottle distilling,” praised for its incredible complexity at a relatively young age. Critics have lauded its balanced cask profile and viscous mouthfeel, marking it as a mandatory acquisition for those following the “New Wave” of Scottish craft distilleries and collectors of Burns Night memorabilia.
