The Whisky

Step into a bold new chapter of Campbeltown history with the Longrow 100 Proof Pinot Noir Cask Finish (2025 Release). Marking the inaugural batch of a new annual series that replaces the iconic “Longrow Red” range, this expression celebrates the traditional British “100 Proof” strength of 57.1% ABV. This 700ml single malt offers a nostalgic yet innovative profile, having been matured for nearly four years in refill Bourbon casks followed by an essential two-year finish in refill Pinot Noir casks.

Utilising refill wine casks, the distillery has ensured the heavy, medicinal peat smoke remains the hero, with the Pinot Noir providing a sophisticated, atmospheric fruitiness rather than a dominant sweetness. This is a “dialled up” Longrow—non-chill filtered, naturally coloured, and brimming with the industrial, oily DNA that makes this heavily peated, double-distilled malt a legend among enthusiasts.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: The peat smoke is immediately present, carrying classic medicinal and TCP notes alongside a burst of redcurrants and strawberry jam. As it opens, deeper layers of red grapes, tobacco leaf, and sea spray emerge, balanced by a wisp of burnt toast and marzipan sweetness.

Palate: The arrival is intense and oily. The peat shifts to a more earthy, musty character, accompanied by rich notes of crème brûlée, vanilla, and roasted almonds. The wine influence is elegant, appearing as tart red fruits and cherry liqueur integrated with charred meat, black pepper, and a hint of mineral slate.

Finish: Long and evocative. Nostalgic notes of red cola cubes and strawberry laces lead the way, followed by sooty smoke and maritime salt. It leaves a lingering impression of dark cocoa, dry oak tannins, and the signature Campbeltown “funk.”

The Distillery

Produced at the Springbank Distillery, Longrow is the heavily peated alter-ego of the house style. Distilled twice (unlike Springbank’s 2.5 times), it utilises direct fired stills and traditional worm tub condensers to create a robust, “Victorian” spirit. A unique factual detail: Springbank remains the only distillery in Scotland to handle 100% of the process on-site, including the traditional floor malting of barley with local peat for 48 hours. This artisanal approach ensures that the Longrow 100 Proof is a raw, handcrafted snapshot of the Kintyre Peninsula.
