The Macallan A Night on Earth – First Light is a special edition single malt dedicated to capturing the anticipation and joy of the Scottish New Year, or Hogmanay, particularly the moment of dawn that follows the celebrations. This expression is designed to evoke the creamy, warming notes associated with the first light of the new year. It is matured in a harmonious combination of ex-Bourbon barrels and the distillery’s signature European and American sherry seasoned oak casks. Bottled at 43% ABV, this whisky is presented in unique packaging created in collaboration with illustrator Nini Sum, making it a highly collectible and thematic release

Our Tasting Notes

The nose is bright, creamy, and evocative, featuring aromas of vanilla, baked apple, soft pastry, and sweet oat biscuits, lifted by fresh citrus zest. The palate is light, smooth, and elegantly sweet, delivering comforting flavours of shortbread, milk chocolate, creamy custard, and subtle notes of lemon and toasted coconut. The whisky possesses a gentle, warming structure that is highly approachable. The finish is medium and sweet, concluding with lingering notes of vanilla, toasted marshmallow, and soft, clean oak.

The Collaboration

This “First Light” edition is celebrated for its distinctive presentation. The limited edition carton was created in partnership with Chinese illustrator Nini Sum, whose artwork uses layers and abstract colours to depict the sky at dawn, reflecting the festive energy of the Scottish New Year and the hope of the new year morning. The packaging makes this release a standout collector’s item, merging the world of fine whisky with contemporary art.
