The Whisky

Mackmyra Expedition is a travel retail exclusive that showcases the innovative, boundary pushing spirit of Sweden’s first malt whisky distillery. Bottled at 46.1% ABV (though some earlier batches were 40%), this expression is a complex marriage of Swedish oak and smoky malt. Specifically, it is a blend of two distinct styles: Mackmyra’s classic elegant recipe and their richly peated recipe, which uses local bog-moss and juniper twigs to smoke the barley.

The “Expedition” name refers to the whisky’s maturation in a unique combination of casks. It is aged primarily in American Oak Bourbon barrels, but the defining characteristic is the secondary maturation in small (30L) casks made from Swedish Oak, which previously held Swedish Cloudberry wine. These small casks (Ankars) provide a high wood to liquid ratio, accelerating the aging process and imbuing the spirit with a spicy, herbal intensity that is uniquely Scandinavian.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh and fruity with a subtle, aromatic smokiness. Initial aromas of pear, citrus, and vanilla are layered over a distinctive herbal note of juniper and dry tobacco. As it opens, the Swedish oak influence emerges with a spicy, peppery scent and a touch of roasted nuts.

Palate: The mouthfeel is lively and well structured. You’ll find flavours of honey, butterscotch, and lemon peel, balanced by a savoury, wood driven spice. The smoke is gentle and “green,” tasting more like smouldering juniper branches than heavy peat. Mid-palate, notes of aniseed and ginger develop, followed by a slight dryness from the cloudberry wine influence.

Finish: Medium to long and refreshingly spicy. The finish lingers with toasted oak, white pepper, and a faint hint of salt, eventually fading into a sweet trail of vanilla and herbal smoke.

The Distillery

Mackmyra was founded in 1999 following a skiing trip where eight friends realized Sweden had no whisky distillery despite having perfect conditions for it. Located in Gävle, the distillery is famous for its Gravity Distillery—a 35-meter tall vertical structure where the production process moves downward via gravity to save energy. A unique factual detail: Mackmyra uses 100% Swedish ingredients, including barley grown under the midnight sun and water from a local esker (glacier-formed ridge). They were also pioneers in using Swedish Oak, which grows much slower than American oak due to the harsh climate, resulting in a tighter grain that delivers a much more aggressive, spicy flavour profile.
