Micil Earls Island is a unique Irish single pot still whiskey that pays homage to the distilling heritage of Galway. It’s crafted by Micil Distillery, a family-run distillery that has been reviving the tradition of poitín and Irish whiskey production in Galway for generations.

This expression is a tribute to the historical “fuisce” distilling traditions of Galway City and Connemara. It’s made using a single pot still, a traditional Irish method that involves a mash bill of both malted and unmalted barley. This gives the whiskey a distinctive spicy and oily character.

What sets Earls Island apart is its maturation process. It’s finished in Bordeaux red wine casks, which impart a rich fruitiness and a layer of complexity to the whiskey. Additionally, a hint of soft turf smoke is incorporated from ex-peated whiskey casks, adding a subtle smoky dimension.

It’s bottled at 46% alc/vol, non-chill filtered, and with no added colouring, ensuring a natural and flavourful experience.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is full of spice and fruit notes. Boiled sweets, apple drops, maraschino cherries, and slightly tart redcurrants and rhubarb create a vibrant and inviting aroma. Cinnamon, nutmeg, marzipan, and toasted nuts add depth and complexity.

Palate: The palate follows the nose with a burst of fruity and spicy flavours. The pot still character shines through with its signature spice, complemented by the red wine cask influence. The subtle peat smoke adds a layer of intrigue without being overpowering.

Finish: The finish is long and warming, with the spices and fruits lingering. The subtle smoke and a hint of oak add complexity and balance.
