The Whisky
Nc’nean Organic Single Malt is a pioneer of the “modern” era of Scotch, hailing from an independent, female founded distillery on the rugged west coast of Scotland. Bottled at 46% ABV, this is a flagship expression that prioritises sustainability and experimental maturation. It is made from 100% organic Scottish barley and matured in a combination of red wine casks and American whiskey barrels, along with a small amount of Sherry casks.
The “Nc’nean” (pronounced Nc-ne-an) name is a tribute to Neachneohain, a Gaelic Queen of Spirits and protector of nature. Inside information highlights their unique approach: the distillery is certified Net Zero for direct emissions and is powered entirely by renewable energy. To achieve its signature “easy going” profile, Nc’nean utilises an exceptionally long fermentation and a slow distillation process, resulting in a spirit that is bright, clear, and bursting with citrus esters.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Bright and zesty. You are greeted with lemon posset and fresh peach, followed by a delicate floral layer of heather honey and poached pears. There is a distinct “green” freshness, reminiscent of a summer meadow.
Palate: The mouthfeel is smooth and oily. It opens with creamy vanilla and butterscotch, quickly joined by tangy citrus peel and spice. Mid-palate, notes of apricot and toasted sourdough emerge, balanced by a gentle warmth of nutmeg and white pepper.
Finish: Clean and lingering. The finish offers a refreshing trail of lemon sorbet and herbal tea, finally drying out with a soft, sweet oakiness and a final hint of ginger.
The Distillery
Nc’nean, located at Drimnin on the Morvern Peninsula, began distilling in 2017. Founded by Annabel Thomas, it was built with the mission to change the way the world thinks about Scotch. A unique factual detail: Nc’nean is the first distillery in the UK to be housed in a converted 19th century farm building that uses a biomass boiler fed by wood chips from the local forest. Their bottles are made from 100% recycled glass, which gives them a distinctive, slightly sea-green hue, and they avoid secondary gift packaging to minimise waste.
Overall Review
The Nc’nean Organic Single Malt is widely reviewed as a “breath of fresh air” in the whisky world. Critics praise its vibrant, youthful energy and its remarkable ability to be enjoyed both neat and in highball cocktails. It is a must-try for enthusiasts seeking a transparent, eco-conscious, and modern Highland dram.
