The Whisky

Honouring the bold spirit of the Sengoku-period daimyo Chōsokabe Motochika, the Shinobu Single Malt “Chosokabe” Single Cask #7519 is a powerhouse of Japanese artisanal excellence. Distilled in the snow-capped Niigata prefecture, this expression was matured exclusively in rare Cognac Oak casks. Bottled at a fierce cask strength of 58% ABV in June 2025, this is a highly limited release with only 300 to 304 bottles available worldwide. It utilises a unique geothermal distillation technique and pure snowmelt water to produce a spirit that is both “bold and unwavering”. As a single cask bottling, it is non-chill filtered and retains its natural, deep golden amber colour.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich, dark, and decadent. You are greeted by a concentrated wave of raisins and jammy figs, immediately followed by a sophisticated layer of ripe fruit and warm spices. The Cognac influence is prominent, adding delicate wisps of vanilla and toasted oak to the heavy fruit profile.

Finish: Long, complex, and “lingering”. The finish features a monumental depth, tapering off with final notes of spiced oak and persistent dark fruit that stay with you long after the final sip.

The Distillery & Legend

Shinobu Distillery, located in the Niigata Prefecture, is the first distillery in a region famous for its “three white treasures”: snow, rice, and sake. Founded by master blender Ken Usami, the name “Shinobu” translates to “forbearance,” a nod to the patience required to age a single malt to perfection. A unique factual detail: This “Sengoku Samurai Series” release celebrates Chōsokabe Motochika, the warrior who unified Shikoku Island. The use of Cognac casks for a full maturation is rare in the Japanese industry, making this a “warrior’s journey” in liquid form—bold, complex, and strictly for the serious collector.
