The Rum
Experience the refined influence of Continental aging with the Cadenhead’s 17 Year Old Spanish Green Label Rum. Part of the highly collectible Green Label series, this 700ml expression was distilled in 2006 at an undisclosed distillery in Panama and bottled in May 2024 at an approachable 46% ABV. This rum represents the “Spanish Style” of distillation—typically lighter and more floral—matured for nearly two decades in ex-bourbon casks.
Inside information reveals that while the spirit was born in the tropics, the majority of its 17 year maturation took place in the cool, damp warehouses of Campbeltown, Scotland. This slow “Continental aging” prevents the oak from becoming over extractive, preserving the delicate ester profile of the Panamanian spirit. As with all Cadenhead releases, it is non-chill filtered and contains no added sugar or colouring, offering a rare, dry, and honest look at long-aged Central American rum.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Bright, sweet, and incredibly aromatic. The nose opens with a whimsical note of candy floss and pink marshmallows, quickly followed by fresh red apples and rhubarb crumble. As it sits, creamy layers of vanilla custard and butter icing emerge.
Palate: The mouthfeel is silky and elegant. It delivers a balanced dessert profile featuring apple strudel, butterscotch, and light toffee. The oak provides a sophisticated backbone of soft cinnamon and nutmeg spice, which prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying.
Finish: Long and warming with a confectionery twist. It tapers off with lingering notes of icing sugar and apricot jam, leaving a final, gentle trail of toasted oak and sweet baking spices.
The Distillery
While the specific Panamanian distillery remains a secret, this “Spanish Style” rum is produced using a multi-column still setup, which creates a clean, refined distillate. A unique factual detail: Panama’s rum industry is unique for its “Reglamento del Ron de Panamá,” a law that mandates rum must be aged for at least two years to be labeled as such. By aging this spirit for 17 years, Cadenhead’s has elevated a versatile base into a complex sipping spirit that rivals high-end Speyside whiskies in its complexity and fruit-forward elegance.
Overall Review
The Cadenhead’s 17 Year Old Spanish Green Label is globally reviewed as a “sophisticated and exceptionally easy-drinking” aged rum. Critics have praised its unique candy-like nose and balanced spice, making it a mandatory purchase for those who prefer the lighter, more elegant side of the rum world.
