Springbank Local Barley (2025 Release) Aged 8 Years Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 58.1% Age: 8 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Whisky
Experience the raw, agricultural heart of Campbeltown with the Springbank Local Barley 8 Year Old (2025 Release). In a historic move for the series, this 700ml expression marks the return of Bere Barley—an ancient heritage grain known for its notoriously low yields but incredibly rich, oily texture. Grown locally at High Ranachan Farm, this spirit was distilled in July 2016 and matured for 8 years in a balanced marriage of 50% Ex-Bourbon and 50% Ex-Sherry casks. Bottled in December 2024 for the February 2025 global launch, it is presented at a commanding cask strength of 58.1% ABV.
The 2025 edition is a departure from the cleaner “Belgravia” barley releases of previous years. The Bere barley creates a “brooding and industrial” profile that enthusiasts often compare to “old-school” Springbank from the early 20th century. With only 13,500 bottles released worldwide, this non-chill filtered and naturally coloured malt is one of the most anticipated collector’s items in the 2025 whisky calendar.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Deeply industrial and farm forward. You are greeted by notes of turpentine and grilled lemons, followed by an unconventional “cleaner” aroma of antiseptic cream and floor wax. As the 58.1% strength breathes, it yields to sweeter layers of salted caramel, vanilla beans, and a wisp of coastal campfire smoke.
Palate: An explosion of texture. The Bere barley provides an exceptionally viscous, gloopy mouthfeel that coats the palate in oil and malt. Flavours of vanilla ice cream and honeycomb are met by a savory surge of sawn wood, roasted walnuts, and black pepper. It is “dirty” in all the right ways, featuring the signature Campbeltown funk of damp earth and industrial oil.
Finish: Long, powerful, and warming. The finish lingers with the bitterness of walnut skins and dark chocolate, finally tapering off with a drying, salty flourish of maritime brine and cold fireplace ash.
The Distillery
Springbank remains the only distillery in Scotland to perform 100% of the production process on-site, including the floor malting of this rare Bere barley. A unique factual detail: Bere barley is one of the oldest cultivated grains in Britain, originally brought to Scotland by the Vikings. It is notoriously difficult to mill because its grains are small and uneven, but it is prized by Springbank for the immense protein and lipid content it adds to the wash, resulting in a spirit that is unparalleled in its “chewy” and oily character.
Overall Review
The Springbank Local Barley 8 Year Old 2025 is globally reviewed as a “viscous masterpiece,” praised for its return to heritage ingredients. Critics have lauded its “massive, farmy personality,” noting that while it is young, the Bere barley provides a depth of texture usually reserved for whiskies twice its age. It is a mandatory purchase for purists who value the “grain-to-glass” philosophy above all else.
