Tamdhu Cuatro Reserva Travel Retail Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 41.2% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
The Whisky
The Tamdhu Cuatro Reserva (41.2% ABV) is an elegant, non-age statement single malt that serves as a dedicated tribute to the distillery’s obsession with Oloroso sherry wood. While many travel retail releases are sized at 1 liter, this specific 700ml version is often found in boutique European airport shops and specialized retailers. The “Cuatro” name highlights its unique maturation journey through four distinct sherry cask styles: first-fill and refill casks of both American and European oak.
This quadruple maturation is designed to create a “complete” sherry profile. The American oak provides the foundation of creamy vanilla and sweet citrus, while the European oak adds the traditional Tamdhu depth of dried fruits and robust oak spice. Bottled at a precise 41.2% ABV, this expression is lighter and more delicately balanced than the distillery’s core 12 or 15 year old expressions, making it an exceptionally smooth choice for “anytime” sipping.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Great elegance and charm. Initial aromas of soft toffee fudge and fresh vanilla are quickly followed by the richness of juicy prunes and dates. In the background, there is a bright lift of red apples, orange peel, and a subtle hint of roasted almonds.
Palate: Mouth-coating and perfectly balanced. The palate mirrors the nose with indulgent notes of crème brûlée and poached fruits. Mid-palate, the sherry influence deepens, revealing dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and a nutty praline quality. The lower ABV ensures a soft, oily texture without any spirituous burn.
Finish: Long, soft, and delicately spiced. The influence of the Oloroso casks is clear in the final notes of sherry soaked raisins and figs, accompanied by a gentle warmth of cinnamon and a lingering sweetness of brown sugar.
The Distillery
Tamdhu, founded in 1897 and located in the heart of Speyside, is one of the few distilleries that matures 100% of its spirit in Oloroso sherry casks. This is a rare and expensive commitment that has earned them the nickname “The Sherry King.” A unique factual detail: Tamdhu is the only distillery in Scotland still utilizing a Saladin box malting system (installed in 1950), which allows them to produce all their own malt on-site. Now under the ownership of Ian Macleod Distillers, the distillery is famed for its stunning Victorian inspired bottle designs and its “no shortcuts” approach to traditional Speyside craftsmanship.
Overall Review
The 700ml / 41.2% edition of Cuatro Reserva is widely praised as a “masterclass in subtlety.” While some sherry bombs can be overwhelming, critics note that this release manages to be rich and “chewy” while remaining incredibly approachable and refreshing.
