The Whisky
The Benrinnes 12 Year Old “The Soldier” is a robust and spirited entry in Act II of the legendary Macbeth Whisky Collection. Created as a collaboration between Livingstone and Elixir Distillers, this 700ml single malt represents the disciplined yet powerful nature of the “Soldier” character. Bottled at a high intensity 54.9% ABV, it is part of the Household Series, which focuses on the foundational figures of the play.
Inside information reveals that this expression was specifically selected for its “meaty” and heavy-bodied spirit—a trademark of Benrinnes. It was matured exclusively in First-Fill Bourbon Barrels, a choice made to showcase the raw power and distillery character of the malt without the masking influence of sherry. This limited release of 1,800 bottles features a striking bird-soldier illustration by Sir Quentin Blake, with character insights provided by the renowned Dave Broom.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh and vibrant. You are greeted by aromas of green apples and lime zest, followed by a distinct floral honey sweetness. As it sits, a savoury, slightly malty note emerges, reminiscent of fresh barley and warm hay.
Palate: The mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and “chewy,” characteristic of the Benrinnes distillate. It opens with vanilla custard and poached pears, quickly followed by a sharp spike of white pepper and ginger. Mid-palate, a delicate creamy nuttiness develops, providing a sturdy backbone to the spirit.
Finish: Clean, medium-length, and bracing. The finish tapers off with a lingering citrus tang and dry oak spice, leaving a crisp and energising impression.
The Distillery
Benrinnes, located at the foot of the mountain of the same name in Speyside, is a true “whisky maker’s whisky.” For much of its history, the distillery utilized a unique and complex partial triple distillation process, which contributed to its famous heavy and meaty character. Although they moved to a more standard double distillation in 2007, they continue to use worm tub condensers—a traditional and rare cooling method that limits copper contact, ensuring the spirit retains its robust, savoury depth.
Overall Review
The Benrinnes 12 Year Old “The Soldier” is widely reviewed as a “shining example of distillery character.” Critics have praised its vibrant, high proof delivery and the successful use of first-fill bourbon wood to highlight the unique “weight” of the Benrinnes spirit.
