Twenty Third Street Distillery is located on the corner of 23rd Street and Renmark Avenue in Renmark, South Australia. The distillery is housed in a historic 1914 landmark building that was originally a winery site. It was resurrected in 2014 by the family-owned Bickford’s Group and officially opened as 23rd Street Distillery on September 23, 2016. It combines century-old craftsmanship with contemporary inventiveness.

This unique creation is a fusion, daring to blend the best of both Australian whisky and American Bourbon, resulting in a complex and intriguing flavour profile. It represents 23rd Street Distillery’s inventive spirit, combining different whisk(e)y traditions to create something uniquely enjoyable. The “Double Cask” refers to its maturation journey, enhancing its complexity before bottling. A blend of 85% pale malt barley Australian whisky and 15% corn-based Bourbon from Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The Australian whisky component has an average of five years’ barrel maturation, and the Bourbon averages two years. Both components are cask matured, with the Bourbon rested in freshly charred American oak. After blending, the final spirit is finished in ex-Bourbon barrels for a further period to enhance its complexity and unify the flavours, all done in Renmark, South Australia. Bottled at 42.37% alc/vol and it is non-chill filtered.

Our Tasting Notes

This unique blend offers a harmonious combination of malted flavours, rich sherry characters (from the Australian whisky component), and toasty oak notes from the Bourbon and finishing casks.

Nose: Expect distinctive toasty oak aromas with hints of sweet sherry, lifted and sweetened by floral and fruity notes. Underlying hints of dried honey, caramel, and butter can also be found.

Palate: Rounded malt-like flavours and the rich sherry characters are evident, with a pleasing toasty oak and a somewhat oily nuttiness. It’s smooth and rich, with notes of vanilla, baked apple, wine-soaked pears, and a creamy, honied profile.

Finish: Medium in length, clean and well-balanced, maintaining the sweetness with no astringency or bitterness. It concludes gently woody, subtly peppery, and with a hint of beeswax or dates and caramel. This whisky is a unique indulgence, perfect for savouring neat or with a little water or ice.
