The Enmore Distillery is a historic and iconic distillery located in Guyana, a country known for its rich rum-making heritage. Enmore is one of the famed “Demerara Distilleries,” situated on the banks of the Demerara River. The distillery holds a special place in the hearts of rum enthusiasts, as it has played a significant role in shaping the character of Demerara rums. Enmore Distillery has a history that dates back to the 18th century, making it one of the oldest distilleries in the Caribbean. Its colonial-era origins add to its charm and historical significance. The distillery’s architecture and equipment pay homage to a bygone era of rum production. One of the defining features of Enmore Distillery is its Wooden Coffey Still, a unique and antique piece of equipment used for distillation. The Wooden Coffey Still is a continuous column still made from wood, and it imparts a distinctive character to the rums produced there. This piece of machinery has become synonymous with Demerara rums. The rums produced at Enmore Distillery are often referred to as Demerara rums, named after the region in Guyana where they are made. Demerara rums are known for their robust, complex, and full-bodied profiles, often characterised by rich molasses notes, dark fruit flavours, and a hint of smokiness. Enmore Distillery has produced both pot still and column still rums, showcasing the versatility of its production methods. This versatility has allowed them to create a wide range of rums, each with its own distinct flavour profile. Enmore rums are often sought after by collectors and connoisseurs for their historical significance and exceptional quality.
Aside from the Wooden Coffey Still, the distillery is also known for its unique Enmore still and Versailles still, both of which contribute to the diversity of rums produced in Guyana. These stills, combined with different aging techniques, give rise to a variety of expressions, from light and fruity to rich and full-bodied. The Enmore Distillery stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and tradition of Guyana’s rum-making industry. Its rums carry the legacy of centuries-old techniques, and they continue to be cherished by rum enthusiasts around the world.
Excellent Enmore, a good benchmark for this style and age. No ester bomb, not a fruity rum either, but a unique mix of herbs and this specific woody style.
Tasting Notes
Nose: elegant Versailles. It opens on a mix of dried herbs – oregano stands out, but also thyme and fennel seeds. Then hints of pencil shavings, green tea with lemon. Very subtle olives in brine. Also fabrics, dried flowers and the lightest whiff of glue and wax in the background. Lovely and unique.
Palate: quite assertive and thick, but again firmly un-fruity. It’s entirely on salty liquorice, a kitchen drawer full of dried herbs, pine needles, with hints of sea salt and camphory earth. Bitter almonds and some medicinal hints, like menthol. Later more pencil shavings. Then ink, black olive tapenade and faded hints of petrol. Not exactly easy sipping rum, but nicely complex.
Finish: long and herbal. Slightly less special now, just a refreshing finale.
