The Whisky
This Royal Brackla 2014 Aged 10 Years, part of Signatory Vintage’s Small Batch Edition (batch #17), offers a fascinating expression from a distillery steeped in history, being the first to receive a Royal Warrant in 1833. Distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2025, this elegant Highland single malt spent a crucial finishing period in first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads. Bottled at 48.2% ABV, un-chillfiltered, and with natural colour, it beautifully marries Royal Brackla’s signature refined, fruity spirit with the luxurious sweetness of PX sherry. Expect a harmonious balance of dried fruits, warming spice, and a silky texture.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and elegantly sweet, with prominent notes of plump raisins, sun-dried figs, and dark toffee from the Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry. A subtle spice of nutmeg and cinnamon intertwines with the delicate, fresh orchard fruits of Royal Brackla – ripe pears and apple blossom. Hints of vanilla-laced pastries and a touch of honey add further complexity.
Palate: A silky and harmonious arrival, coating the palate with luxurious sweetness. Flavours of rich fruitcake and caramelised nuts are beautifully balanced by vibrant notes of ripe apricots and chocolate-covered dates. A gentle warmth from ginger and nutmeg develops, perfectly complementing the inherent graceful character of Royal Brackla, offering both depth and a refreshing fruitiness.
Finish: Long and wonderfully balanced, carrying the lingering sweetness and richness of the PX sherry. Subtle notes of honey and vanilla persist, alongside a gentle drying oak spice. A hint of almond and orange oil can be detected in the very end, leaving a sophisticated and satisfying aftertaste.
The Independent Bottler
Signatory Vintage is one of Scotland’s most respected independent bottlers, celebrated for its unwavering commitment to quality and transparency. Established in 1988 by brothers Andrew and Brian Symington, Signatory Vintage quickly carved a niche by offering single cask, un-chillfiltered, and natural colour whiskies – practices that were far less common at the time but are now widely revered by connoisseurs. Their name, “Signatory,” stems from their original intention to have famous personalities sign the labels of their special bottlings, a unique concept that unfortunately proved impractical but left a lasting legacy in their brand name. Over the decades, Signatory Vintage has amassed an astonishing collection of casks from distilleries across Scotland, including many silent stills. This extensive inventory allows them to release an incredibly diverse range of whiskies, from youthful and vibrant expressions to incredibly rare and aged treasures. Each bottle is a testament to the individual character of the distillery and the unique journey of the liquid within its cask.
Signatory Vintage represents an unparalleled opportunity to explore the true essence of Scotch whisky. Their commitment to bottling at natural cask strength, un-chillfiltered, and without added colouring ensures that every drop delivers the purest and most authentic distillery character. When you choose a Signatory Vintage bottling, you’re not just buying a whisky; you’re acquiring a piece of liquid history, a unique expression that tells its own story from cask to glass. Discover the depth and diversity of Scotland’s finest spirits with Signatory Vintage.
The Distillery
Royal Brackla, nestled near Cawdor in the Highlands, holds a unique place in Scotch whisky history as the very first distillery to be granted a Royal Warrant by King William IV in 1833, earning it the moniker “The King’s Own Whisky.” Established in 1812 by Captain William Fraser, its esteemed status quickly set a benchmark for quality and craftsmanship in the burgeoning legal whisky industry.
Known for its elegant and fruit-forward spirit, Royal Brackla typically offers a refined profile characterised by notes of orchard fruits, gentle spice, and a creamy texture, often enhanced by its sherry cask maturation. This “King’s Own” quality continues to shine through its whiskies, which are prized for their smoothness and sophisticated balance. Royal Brackla represents a taste of true whisky nobility, offering a regal and exceptionally polished Highland single malt that is both historically significant and deliciously rewarding.
