The Glenlivet Distillery is located in Rothes, in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, near the River Spey. The name “Glenlivet” means “Valley of the Livet,” referring to the river that runs through the valley. The Glenlivet holds a significant place in Scotch whisky history. It was founded in 1824 by George Smith, who was one of the very first distillers in Scotland to obtain a legal distilling license after the passing of the 1823 Excise Act. This act aimed to curb widespread illicit distilling. George Smith faced threats from angry illegal distillers but persisted, carrying pistols for protection. His courage and the quality of his spirit laid the foundation for legal Speyside whisky. The distillery became so renowned that other distilleries started illegally adding “Glenlivet” to their names, leading to a legal battle that George Smith won in 1884, securing the exclusive right to use “The Glenlivet.” Today, it is owned by Pernod Ricard (via its Chivas Brothers subsidiary). It is one of the world’s best-selling single malt Scotch whiskies, particularly strong in the US market. The distillery is famous for producing a light, elegant, fruity, and approachable single malt, a style that has remained consistent throughout its long history.
The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Double Oak is a cornerstone of The Glenlivet’s core range, embodying the distillery’s signature elegant and fruity character. The “Double Oak” refers to its maturation process in two distinct types of oak casks: Traditional Oak Casks (often European oak or a mix): These lay the foundation for the whisky’s character. American Oak Casks (specifically virgin American oak or first-fill ex-Bourbon casks): These are known for imparting prominent notes of vanilla and coconut, contributing to the whisky’s distinctive smoothness and creaminess. Typically bottled at 40% alc/vol, making it very accessible and smooth.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh, fruity, and summery. You’ll often find notes of ripe orchard fruits like green apple and pear, bright citrus (lemon/pineapple), and delicate floral hints (honeysuckle). Underlying vanilla and a hint of malt sweetness are also present.
Palate: Well-balanced and very smooth, with a creamy mouthfeel. Strong pineapple notes are often highlighted, alongside sweet ripe pears, vanilla, and a gentle toffee or butterscotch sweetness. The fruitiness is prominent, making it very approachable.
Finish: Long, creamy, and smooth. The fruity and vanilla notes linger, sometimes with a subtle hint of oak spice or almond. It’s generally clean and refreshing.
This whisky represents The Glenlivet’s classic style – a harmonious blend of fruit, floral notes, and delicate sweetness, refined by its dual-cask maturation. The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Double Oak is celebrated for its well-balanced, fruity, and smooth profile, making it a popular choice for both newcomers and seasoned whisky drinkers
