Laphroaig is Gaelic for ‘the beautiful hollow by the broad bay’. Opened in 1815 this distillery has a wonderful history and produces exceptionally memorable whisky. Positioned in a bay sheltered by rocky islands the distillery has the warm seas of the Gulf Stream nearby to help in maturation process. The water comes from Kilbride Dam a natural water source on Islay. In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour. American bourbon casks are used to mature this whisky and they produce a unique 10, 18 and 25 year old range of single malts. Interesting fact about Laphroaig is that during prohibition it was allowed to be imported into America because customer’s thought it had medicinal purposes.
North Star Spirits is an independent bottler based in Glasgow, Scotland. They pride themselves on bottling the finest single malt Scotch whisky, blended whisky and blended malt Scotch whisky. Producing artisan single cask whisky from various regions of Scotland as well as bottling rums, gins and Bourbon whiskey. All products are small batch, bottled at cask strength.
The distillery name Williamson is becoming more popular when buying independently bottled Laphroaig. This is to help conceal the distilleries identity. The use of the name Williamson is a tribute to the first female Scotch whisky distillery manager, Bessie Williamson, who also worked at Laphroaig for some time, steering the brand to success in the US before and after World War II. Distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2023 after 11 years maturing in a single Pedro Ximenez Hogshead. Bottled at 56.4% ABV. Your chance to own and taste a PX Sherry matured single cask Laphroaig, who’s jumping at the chance!
