A Stark Contrast #1
I would like to start off by introducing myself, my name is Tamara. I have recently found myself on an amazing journey joining the team here at The Whisky Company as a customer service officer and bookkeeper. I’m finding a new appreciation for sitting back and enjoying a dram on my own or with friends, something I have never tried before (It turns out that being a workaholic is not so good for your health). I would like to share my journey with you, while I learn about whisky and find my palate. Each month I’ll be writing about my whisky experiences as I learn all about this wonderful industry.
I was first introduced to Whisky (not including those horrible things mixed with coke) when my husband decided to take out an online membership. He received a bottle of Signatory Vintage Glen Rothes 1997 and I fell in love. Honestly, I thought whisky was Johnnie Walker and alike, boy was I misled. From there I’ve tried a few, I find I’m drawn to the highland malts, Ben Nevis 10 years old, Arran port Cask are 2 of my go to whiskies right now, it doesn’t seem to matter my mood or where I’m relaxing, these 2 hit the spot.
With that said I decided to start this series with a whisky I have never tried before. I thought I might sit back with Hubby and see if he could be a little useful with thoughts and feelings on this dram, as usual, I was incorrect on this. I love him to bits but all he gives me is the same old “tasting notes”, I don’t want to do that. Drinking whisky is not just about smells and tastes, it’s about how it makes you feel, the memories it stirs deep within. So, we’re at the table, I’ve opened the Signatory Vintage Fettercairn 1997 18-year-old, poured a couple of glasses and taken a deep breath. I can smell the crispness and spice, I take a sip, roll the whisky around in my mouth and swallow, breath in through my mouth and let the flavour sink in. Fresh crisp apples and spices, oh my god it’s so good. I take another sip and the warming starts, leaves falling on an Autumn day, sitting on the porch of a cabin by the lake. Warming my inner soul while pulling my oversized jumper up to my chin and I’m wearing my extra-long Ugg boots. Listening to the lake lapping at the shore. I fell in love with the scene and smells this whisky gave me. I don’t have a cabin by the lake, not even a pontoon by the damn, but I felt it, I smelt it. This is my favourite thing about trying different whiskies, there’s always somewhere it takes me.
I hope you guys enjoy whatever dram you are drinking right now and I hope I can inspire you to try something new or appreciate your whisky in a new light.
