About Gin
It’s time to get your groove on and explore the World of Gin’s at The Whisky Company. This dedicated section will look at Gins from all over the world. From the wild rugged hills in Scotland’s West to the beautiful fresh green lands of Tasmania we will cover them all.
There are dry gins, sipping gins, spiced gins, saffron infused gins and many more exiting ways to explore gin.
Originating in Holland in 1550, Gin was first made when a professor of medicine, Franciscus de la Boe attempted to concoct a cure for stomach complaints using the diuretic properties of Juniper berries. He stumbled on this wonderful infusion, which he named Genève. It soon became popular as an approachable alcoholic drink. The migration back to the UK with this new style liquor came from troops returning from the 30 year war who were given rations of Gin to keep out the cold before a battle. The love affair had begun, and the product termed ‘Dutch courage’ was enthusiastically brought back for consumption at home.
