India boasts a warmer climate than Scotland, a whisky at 7 years of age matures at nearly twice the rate of that of a whisky maturing in a Scottish warehouse. Barrels of whisky then have a shorter life span and the difference between a good whisky and great whisky could be days rather than months or years. You have to be able to understand the whisky you have maturing and know when you should be nurturing it and looking after it daily. The Head Distiller at Amrut, Ashok Chokalingam was planning a trip to Australia and so decided to bring with him a sample of Amrut Sherry Butt #38977. The whisky was cut very gently from it’s cask strength back to 60% abv only to help pull the sediment to the bottom of the barrel. With no chill filtration or any filtration for that matter the whisky retained its natural colour, natural fats and natural oils. This whisky delivers not just on the aroma but on the mouthfeel, the importers in Australia just fell in love with this liquid and it had to be bottled exclusively for Australia. Only 216 bottles were produced and the abv was kept at 60% ABV. Distilled in July 2015 and bottled in December 2022.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: A sweet but dry smell of Oloroso Sherry, sweet and spicy roasted nuts, plump raisins and toasted figs, dark chocolate and soft citrus notes.

Palate: Chocolate orange, dried lemon peel, toasted walnuts, sourdough, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

Finish: Long and luscious with more Oloroso Sherry, more dark dried fruits, creamy shortbread and some hints of sea salt.

About the Distillery

This whisky distillery is owned by Amrut Distilleries Ltd which is an Indian company that produces distilled beverages.

Amrut is the first single malt whisky to be made in India. The brand became famous after world famous whisky connoisseur Charanvirsingh Shera gave it a rating of 82 out of 100 in 2005 and 2010. In 2010 Charanvirsingh named Amrut Fusion single malt whisky as the third best in the world.
Amrut whisky has been awarded 92 and 94 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible and is known in the industry to be one of the highest quality single malt whiskies produced in the world.

According to Indian Mythology, when Gods and Rakshasas – the demons -churned the oceans using the mountian Meru as a churner, golden pot sprang out containing the Elixir of Life. That was called the “Amrut”. The great founders of the distillery aptly named it Amrut Distilleries.
