Description
Bowmore Aged 18 Years Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 43% Age: 18 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Whisky
The Bowmore Aged 18 Years is a prestigious and deeply complex Islay single malt that perfectly captures the “balanced” side of peat. Bottled at 43% ABV, this expression is matured in a masterful combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. This dual sherry maturation provides a rich, syrupy depth that rounds out Bowmore’s characteristically gentle, floral smoke.
Inside information reveals that the 18 year old is often considered the “sweet spot” of the Bowmore range. While the 12 year old is vibrant and the 25 year old is exceptionally mellow, the 18 year old offers a perfect equilibrium of age driven fruitiness and island character. It is a slow-maturing malt that benefits from the unique microclimate of Bowmore’s famous No. 1 Vaults, the oldest maturation warehouse in Scotland, which sits below sea level.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Pungent and rich. You are greeted by creamy caramel toffee and ripe exotic fruits, followed by a soft, fragrant woodsmoke and a hint of dark chocolate.
Palate: The mouthfeel is velvety and luxurious. Initial flavours of treacle and orange peel give way to a sophisticated “salty-sweet” profile of roasted coffee, dates, and bitter cocoa. The smoke is integrated and mellow, acting as a background hum to the rich fruit.
Finish: Long, balanced, and remarkably smooth. It leaves a lingering trail of sherry soaked raisins, light peat, and a final, savoury touch of coastal air.
The Distillery
Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay and one of the oldest in all of Scotland. Located on the shores of Loch Indaal, it is one of the few remaining distilleries to still operate its own traditional floor maltings, providing about 25% of its own barley needs. A unique factual detail: Bowmore is famous for its “medium peated” style (approx. 20-25 PPM), which is notably less medicinal than its southern neighbours like Laphroaig or Ardbeg. This makes it a favourite for those who enjoy the complexity of Islay without the overwhelming “bandage” or iodine notes.
Overall Review
The Bowmore 18 is widely reviewed as a “connoisseur’s choice,” praised for its masterful integration of dark sherry and soft smoke. Critics often describe it as one of the most elegant whiskies in the world, making it an essential purchase for milestone celebrations or serious collectors.
