Fleurieu Distillery Albatross Australian Single Malt Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: Australia
The Fleurieu Distillery is located in the historic river port of Goolwa, South Australia, where the Murray River meets the Southern Ocean. This unique geographical position, right on the water’s edge (reportedly only 15m from the water and 2m above sea level), is central to the distillery’s philosophy and the character of its whiskies. Distillers Gareth and Angela Andrews firmly believe that authentic whisky carries a strong “sense of place.” They attribute their whisky’s unique profile to the interaction of the barrels with the specific coastal climate of Goolwa, where barrels “breathe in” the environs of the river and sea due to rapid changes in humidity and air pressure caused by the intermittent hot summer days and cool sea breeze nights. The distillery began its life as Steam Exchange Brewery in 2004, with the whisky distilling journey beginning in 2011. This background in brewing allows them a deep understanding of flavour extraction and fermentation profiles. Despite being a relatively young distillery, Fleurieu has quickly gained significant recognition, winning numerous national and international awards and trophies for its whiskies, including Best of Category at the American Distilling Institute Awards and Champion Australian Whisky at various Australian spirits awards.
Fleurieu Albatross Single Malt Whisky is a flagship release from the relatively young, but highly acclaimed, Fleurieu Distillery in South Australia. The name “Albatross” evokes the powerful and graceful “wandering storm bird” that glides over the Southern Ocean, perfectly embodying the distillery’s coastal location and the whisky’s character, which is influenced by the unique maritime environment. The Albatross is a continuous release from Fleurieu, representing their core house style. It is typically matured in Tawny and Apera (Australian Sherry) casks, with some information also indicating the use of American oak (ex-Bourbon) barrels, suggesting a marriage of different cask types to create a consistent profile. It is generally bottled at 46% alc/vol and is non-chill filtered and natural in colour, a hallmark of quality Australian craft whisky.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Expect a delightful mix of lifted malt notes and a pronounced maritime influence – think sea spray, fresh sea air, or a subtle brininess. This is beautifully complemented by rich, sweet notes of maple, vanilla oak, and sometimes a hint of spicy sea-air aromas. You might also find hints of dried fruits (from the Tawny/Apera casks) and a touch of nutmeg or allspice.
Palate: The palate is generally described as lively, smooth, and well-weighted. Flavours of vanilla and sweet oak from the American oak influence are prominent, alongside the warming spices of allspice, nutmeg, and perhaps cinnamon. The dried fruits, raisins, and a “tawny oak character” from the fortified wine casks add depth and sweetness. There’s often a signature salted caramel and umami character, a testament to the distillery’s unique coastal maturation. Some tasters also find notes of dark chocolate or even a hint of polish.
Finish: The finish is typically long, sweet, and satisfying. It often leaves a lingering taste of barley, dried fruits (especially raisin sweetness), and a gentle continuation of the spice and salted caramel notes. The maritime influence can also persist, providing a clean and refreshing end.
The Fleurieu Albatross is celebrated for its ability to combine classic whisky elements with a distinct sense of place, showcasing the impact of its coastal South Australian maturation.
