The Whisky
Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength is a legendary titan of the whisky world, famously known as the first ever “cask strength” single malt to be released commercially back in 1968. Bottled at a powerful 60% ABV (the “105” refers to its British Proof measurement), this expression is the ultimate embodiment of the Glenfarclas “family style.” It is matured primarily in premium Oloroso Sherry butts, hand-selected from the distillery’s vast dunnage warehouses in Ballindalloch.
What makes the 105 truly remarkable is its consistency; despite being bottled at such high proof, it maintains a shocking levels of smoothness and fruit driven elegance. Inside information suggests that the 105 is typically a marriage of 8 to 10 year old whiskies, though the distillery never carries an age statement on this label to ensure they can select the most “active” and intense sherry casks for the vatting. It remains a pure, unadulterated Highland malt: no added colouring, no chill-filtration, and no compromises.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: A massive, heavy-hitting sherry influence. You are greeted by complex oak, apples, and pears, followed by a tempting dark toffee sweetness. As it sits, deeper notes of fruitcake, walnut, and polished leather emerge, with a hint of dried orange peel and a distant wisp of sulfur that defines traditional sherry aging.
Palate: Powerful and assertive. The 60% ABV carries a concentrated explosion of rich spices, dried fruits, and honeyed malt. Mid-palate, it turns toward dark chocolate, espresso beans, and hazelnuts. Adding a splash of water reveals a softer side, bringing out creamy vanilla, cinnamon, and stewed plums.
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming. The finish is surprisingly smooth given its strength, lingering with peppery oak, dark cocoa, and a drying nuttiness that keeps you coming back for more.
The Distillery
Glenfarclas (Gaelic for “Valley of the Green Grass”) is one of the few remaining distilleries in Scotland that is still truly independent and family-owned. Since 1865, it has been operated by the Grant family, now in its sixth generation. A unique factual detail that separates Glenfarclas from the rest is their insistence on direct-fired stills. While most modern distilleries use internal steam coils to heat their stills, Glenfarclas uses external gas burners to create a “rummager” effect. This causes a slight caramelisation of the wash, contributing to the heavy, robust, and “big” spirit character that allows it to stand up to decades of intense sherry maturation.
Overall Review
The Glenfarclas 105 is widely regarded as one of the best value for money cask strength whiskies in existence. Critics consistently praise it as the “Gold Standard” for sherry bombs, offering a raw and honest experience of Highland power.
